The least impressive part of the Osmo Action 3 is the still photos. With only 12 megapixels available in this sensor, the results just don’t match up with what the GoPro Hero11 is capable of with its 27-megapixel sensor. Generally speaking, DJI has done a great job of making the Osmo Action 3 feel robust, though the lens frame does protrude slightly around the sides of the camera. This could catch in the heat of the action, making it a potential weak point versus the GoPro Hero line, whose lenses are flush with the top and sides of the camera. Tested in a laboratory environment with different video specifications, EIS disabled, and screens off, and should be used for reference only. The operating time of the 4K/120fps specification is not the battery exhaustion time. The actual operating time is related to ambient temperature and other factors. It's built to handle cold weather, so you can keep recording for up to 150 minutes in temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) Before use, close the battery compartment cover and the USB-C port cover, and tighten the Lens Protective Cover. It is recommended to install the Waterproof Case for long-term underwater shooting or in environments with high water impact pressure. Osmo Action 3 and its Waterproof Case have an IP68 waterproof rating. Do not use the camera in hot springs or expose it to corrosive liquids.

This makes it much easier to detach and reattach the camera and swap between mounts, avoiding the fiddly process of having to screw your camera to securely mount it – and unscrew it when you need to move it. Add the protective frame that comes supplied with the standard bundle and you can even mount the camera on its end, to shoot vertical footage for social media. Osmo Action 3 Video and Imaging

Battery capacity has been increased over the Action 2, from 1300mAh to 1770mAh, although interestingly DJI’s own figures suggest the Action 2 can last a little bit longer: 180 minutes to the Osmo Action 3’s 160 minutes (when recording 1080p at 30fps, with image stabilisation turned off).

You can of course use your smartphone and the DJI Mimo app as a form of remote control, and it works brilliantly thanks to simple controls, big screen viewfinder and solid wireless connection. Using the app also enables livestreaming. The DJI Osmo Action 3 has a tough battle on its hands. Its main rival, GoPro, dominates the market so completely that to make any headway it has to offer something extra, and ideally for less money. One thing DJI does really well is the 360-degree HorizonSteady, which corrects shakes for any horizontal rotation and keeps a straight horizon. It works really well and allowed me to get some shots I would have messed up otherwise, but alas, it’s limited to 2.7K footage. I’m looking forward to this working in 4K in a future version. At the base of the Action 3 is a magnetic mounting connector for landscape mounting, and in the box, you also get a Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame, which wraps around the camera to enable tall, TikTok-ready mounting in portrait orientation.
