About this deal

I want to make my first cupcake is their any tips for decorating your first batch of cupcakes Reply

The best frosting for decorating cupcakes is a stable buttercream that holds its shape when piped. For this tutorial, I use my favorite vanilla frosting recipe, which I’ve also included in the printable recipe card below the post. It’s colored using Americolor “Teal” gel color (see also, how to color buttercream). Just try making them evenly spaced, and you can turn anything into beautiful baskets! 9. Wilton #233 For the grass effect on the left, we used the Ateco 133 tip. The basketweave pattern on the right is made with the Wilton 48 piping nozzle. Each baking kit is based on a Bakestarters' original, tried-and-tested recipe, with detailed instructions for you to create your own layered cake from scratch.

Disposable Decorating Bags – If you like easy cleanup (who doesn’t), these bags are perfect for decorating. Available in both 12 and 16 in. sizes, these bags work with any Wilton decorating tip and coupler. When you’re done, simply remove the tip from the bag and throw the bag away. Is a large, round tip for making simple rounded swirls or drop-shaped buttercream on cupcakes. It can also help you to pipe frosting evenly between cake layers. Bake cakes. Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool two cake layers (per cake). Level each layer to 2½ in. high. The photo above shows two main types of leaf piping tips. The one on the left, the Wilton 352, has a large V notch, which creates a smooth leaf that is full at the base and tapered towards the end. The tip on the right with the smaller opening, the Wilton 67, has a cut along the top and sides with a tiny notch in its middle. This helps make a more ruffled leaf.Squeeze out a small floret of frosting in the center of the cupcake by applying light pressure until a small amount of frosting comes out. This little dollop in the middle will act as a guide and also help to hold up the swirl. Wilton 1M: Wilton 1M is a classic piping tip and the buttercream rose is a staple decoration. Start in the center and, using medium pressure, pipe a flat swirl. You can see this lovely rose decoration on this 6 inch birthday cake. You can also create two-toned frosting roses. You can also produce a decoration that resembles soft serve ice cream. Start in the center and, using medium pressure, move the tip slowly around, building a tall swirl on top of itself. I cut the tip of the Icing bag where I saw someone on a you tube video cut it, put the coupler in and tip and woo hoo seemed great. Use a large piping bag. Using a larger piping bag is super helpful when it comes to learning how to pipe cupcakes. You’ll have enough room to hold the bag at the top and above the piping tip, making it easier to apply even pressure to the bag.

Take a look at the tutorial below to see all 4 styles and how I piped them. I really hope this will be helpful the next time you are looking to pipe cupcakes and let me know in the comments below which is your favourite. For 3D ruffles, use the Wilton 124 (left). The Wilton 104 (right) can be used to pipe subtle frills with buttercream.

Closed Star Piping Nozzles

Don’t overfill. I don’t recommend filling your piping bag more than two-thirds full. This way, it’s easier to handle. Sometimes the larger bags are best when they’re only half-filled.

I have a tutorial on how to use a piping bag that goes over everything from filling a piping bag to fitting it with piping tips. It’s a great lead-up to this decorating tutorial! In the meantime, let’s touch on some basics when it comes to filling a piping bag for frosting cupcakes: Piping Bags–I use a large 1 8″ disposable pastry bag. You don’t need to keep refilling the bag with frosting as you go, and larger bags are also sturdier. The Wilton 2D piping tip, also called a drop flower tip, is another of my favorite tips for piping cupcakes. It’s found in many craft and baking stores. This type of tip creates a soft, ruffled effect and works best with lighter-style frostings, like Swiss meringue buttercream and whipped cream. I don’t recommend using a drop flower tip if your frosting contains add-ins like cookie crumbs or crushed nuts as they tend to clog up the opening. Select your desired piping tip from the list above, and have your cake, cupcakes, or other confections cooled and ready. Here are all of my cake recipes and cupcake recipes. Simply pipe, stop squeezing, pull away, and repeat. To give it a more natural look, pipe the grass shape slightly to the sides instead of straight up. 10. Wilton Easy BloomsDecorating cupcakes comes down to the following: pressure, position, and a reliable, pipeable frosting recipe. I go over all of these points in my how-to guide below. Hold the piping bag straight up and swirl continuously to get classic cupcake swirls. Hold it at an angle, and you can create shell-shaped decorations! The grass tip is one of the most popular in this category and can be used to pipe grass and fur, like these Easter Egg Cupcakes or this Fluffy Bunny Cake. The basketweave tip, which has both a flat and serrated side, is great for adding texture to the sides of your cake, like in this Floral Basketweave Cake. This characteristic makes closed star tips great for piping rosettes , flowers, and making swirls. You can also create pretty, detailed ruffles using this tip!
