I really, really thought that I was going to love this book but the majority of this book really, really irritated me. The classism, prejudice, and not-so-great approach to mental health appalled me. I am extremely grateful for health workers and they deserve to feel proud of their work - but not at the expense of their vulnerable patients. Plus, anyone who doubts its relevance completely (and not just periodically) should read about the NYPD's new "Sky Watch" tower program. I knew nothing of the work of Michel Foucault. So What prompted me to choose this book? Perhaps, it seems to me, the fact that Michel Foucault was one of the great French intellectuals of the second half of the twentieth century and that he was a reference for many thinkers and philosophers.
