Safety – Finally, as with all heat styling tools, an automatic shutoff is a useful safety feature to avoid accidental damage. We’ve noted automatic shutoff times below. How do I use my automatic hair curler? The slightly scary-looking Kiss InstaWave comes with a rotating barrel featuring prongs that are designed to detangle the hair as you curl. As such, it’s particularly good for dry or frizzy hair that tends to snag on other curlers. Although the prongs look a little alarming, the tool works in a very similar way to others on our list – section the hair, insert a tress into the iron, and press a switch to wrap and curl the hair. The ceramic barrel leaves hair feeling soft and glossy, and it’s easy to change direction as required for natural alternating curls or a more stylised uniform look.Brand: Remington are obviously a strong and recognisable brand for making great Haircare Products, so you’d expect Remington Ci606 Curl Revolution Automatic Hair Curler to deliver to these expectations. But always consider the brand when you’re thinking about the quality of the product you’re going to buy, and where quality is an important factor to you, look only at those well known brands (of course only if your budget allows). As with all heat-styling products, automatic hair curlers offer a range of features for styling and protecting hair from excessive heat. You might have your sight set on a specific product, but chances are that there’s plenty of other products out there that do the exact same thing. It’s very rare to find a product that’s truly unique, and unless you’re buying parts for repairs, you can usually find multiple items that will suit your needs. Compare prices The attachment we were most excited to use, and the one that takes this styler from a standard hot brush to a Dyson Airwrap dupe, was the hot tong. After drying our hair to 80% and dividing it into four large sections, we methodically moved around the head, curling small strips of hair one at a time. Key specs – Styling method: Nano-silver and ceramic barrel with curling motor; Heat settings: 6; Auto shutoff: Yes (60 mins); Cord length: n/a

Instead of twisting the hair around a barrel using a mechanical motor, Dyson’s Airwrap styler propels dry or damp hair using air. The difference in pressure created by the air as it blows through the vents wraps hair around a heated barrel to create curls, waves, and ringlets. The use of air rather than direct heat from a plate means you can style hair from damp after washing. In addition, the Airwrap styles hair at a cooler-than-typical 150˚C to keep damage to a minimum, while ionic technology preserves moisture and reduces frizz. The most important thing you’ll need for curling longer hair is a tong with a longer barrel. This will allow you to wrap larger sections of hair around the tongs at a time, reducing the overall amount of time required to style a full head of long hair. A long barrel also means you can wind long hair vertically around the length of the barrel to create pretty ringlets, rather than rolling up from the tip of the hair. Using the length of the barrel to wind vertically means the root and upper sections of the hair are heated for the same length of time as the tips, resulting in longer-lasting curls that are less likely to drop.

Long hair proving difficult to curl? We’ve got you covered with our pick of the best hair curlers designed for longer hair

There’s a choice of two heat settings – 210ºC or 230ºC – and three timer settings, so you can choose the length of time you want to heat the hair. The Curl Secret emits a friendly beep when it’s time to release the hair. To curl with a wand, section the hair and then point the wand so the tip is facing diagonally downwards at a roughly 45º angle. Then, with a heat-protective glove on (usually supplied in the box), wrap the hair around the wand in a spiral shape. Hold the ringlet in place for a few seconds, then tilt the wand downwards to allow the curled section to fall down. If you’re using an air-based curler, simply hold the barrel next to the section of hair you wish to curl and let it wrap the hair into place, again keeping the tool itself still; then release once the curl is set. Key specs – Barrel size: 28mm; Temperature settings: 3; Maximum temperature: 200°C; Cord length: 2.5m

During testing, we confirm the weight and dimensions of the curling tool, as well as any extras that are included in the box. We time how long the tool takes to heat up after switching on. We then note how long it takes to style a full head of hair, taking into account the hair length and texture that we are testing it on. We evaluate the overall ease of use of the curling tool, how it feels in the hand and the finish and feel of the hair after curling. Finally, we note how well the styles last over a typical day. Reduce frizz and stop static from occurring thanks to the tourmaline and ionic conditioning properties of the tool. There's also a ceramic coating which ensures the barrel glides through the hair leaving you with gorgeously smooth curls. Instant Curl technology Key specs – Styling method: Ceramic barrel with curling motor; Heat settings: 2; Auto shutoff: Yes (60 mins); Cord length: 2.5m Section your hair and apply a heat-protective spray, then clamp the hair at the top of the section where you want the curl to start. Twist the curling iron and move it slowly down towards the roots, allowing the length of the hair to wind around the tongs as you do so (gently pressing on the clamp to open it a little will allow your hair to slide through). You won’t need to take the tongs all the way to the ends – your hair will spiral a few times around the tongs creating a ringlet even if you leave the last inch or so out. With the hair wrapped into a spiral shape, hold the tool in place for a few seconds and then release the clamp to let your ringlet loose. Most automatic hair curlers use a rotating motor to draw a section of hair around a heated barrel – in effect, it’s the same action of winding hair around a tong or curling wand by hand, but with the motor taking care of it for you. Apart from that rotating mechanism, the majority of automatic curlers function in exactly the same way as a pair of tongs, heating a strand of hair while it’s around the cylindrical barrel to set it into a ringlet shape. After a few seconds, the device releases the curled hair and you can move onto the next strand.

GHD’s Curve curling wands and tongs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, to suit the size and shape of the curls you wish to create. The Curve Soft has a larger 32mm barrel, which is perfect for creating larger ringlets and adding volume, rather than for corkscrew curls. The Curve Soft has a spring-lever clamp on the side of the barrel, so it’s also great for styling longer hair; other wands in the range don’t include a clamp and so are a little more difficult to wind longer hair around. Key specs – Styling method: Hot air with Coandă effect hair wrapping; Heat settings: 2 (plus cold shot); Auto shutoff: n/a; Cord length: 2.6m

From the consumer’s perspective, terms like ‘online retail’, ‘e-commerce’ and ‘digital shopping’ all essentially mean the same thing.By the third use, we felt more confident in what we were doing and created large bouncy curls that lasted hours. Since the FlexStyle uses air to wrap the hair around a barrel, it can style hair from damp or dry. The curls it creates are soft and bouncy – if perhaps not as shiny as those styled using the Airwrap – and the diffuser, concentrato,r and brush attachments mean the FlexStyle does more than simply curl the hair.
