I paired the Wharfedale 12s, Concept 20s, 3020i and 3030i with an NAD D3020v2, which is 30w per channel, 5w less than yours. As long as you have reasonably sensitive speakers and don't listen in huge rooms, at insane volumes or several metres away from your speakers, 35w per channel should be fine. The NAD D3020v2 is a reasonably warm amp, and pairs nicely with the Q Acoustics, although the combination of warm amp and slightly warm speakers leans my system to the warm side rather than balancing it out. I do this because I am prone to listening fatigue and prefer an overall smoother, warmer sound. I moved to more dynamic a fare and an original cut of Greenslade’s excellent Time And Tide, from 1975 and Warner Bros. The Early Reflections curve averages various angles to estimate the very first bounces off your walls, floor, and ceiling to reach your ears. These reflections, which are mostly in the front hemisphere, significantly affect timbre too. We want the ER curve to tilt down but otherwise be pretty similar to the Listening Window response. This curve also best predicts the final in-room response. At the heart of these revised speakers is a much-improved cabinet. P2P (Point-to-Point) bracing is now deployed to enhance rigidity and reduce cabinet distortion. Reducing cabinet distortion lets the drive units operate at their optimum, giving a cleaner, purer sound. The overall design of the Q-Acoustics 3020i speaker is very reasonable. When you try to reduce the cabinet resonance, you can make it louder. When the tweeter is not affected by the vibration of the lower mid-bass monomer, it can also make louder sounds. Therefore, I can turn it on loudly and maintain clarity. I do not feel that the clarity of the sound will be significantly reduced due to the increasing volume.
Story
Many bookshelf speakers are very small, so the drivers used are not enough to produce audible and perceptible bass. One of the Q-Acoustics 3020i’s game changers is the larger cabinet size. Compared with the previous model, with larger-scale sound and deeper bass, the speaker size has increased by 25%. The increased internal volume gives these speakers an extended low-frequency response to large-scale sounds. The highs seem balanced just right to my ears – never too harsh, and with detail presentation I think is on par with more expensive speakers. The 3030i seems to perform quite well at presenting details at low volumes too, which is a quality I appreciate as I do most of my listening at don’t-bother-my-neighbors volumes.
