The NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) ratio is 6-9-6, and the high phosphorus content is what helps this product better promote the health of germinating seeds compared to other lawn feeds. Nitrogen is responsible for leaf growth, and potassium encourages plants to grow and function correctly. PLEASE NOTE: Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum Mats and bulk Bag products are delivered on a pallet and can only be delivered to the kerbside.

We’ve tried and tested a lot of lawn fertilisers, and in our opinion, this Miracle-Gro feed is one of the best-formulated feeds for Autumn. Its seaweed content provides an excellent source of organic matter, which encourages healthy root development – essential for winter survival. Plus, it’s lower in nitrate to reduce leaf growth the prepare the grass for a period of winter dormancy. Again, we’re pleased with the formula of the Proctors Autumn And Winter Grass Feed – it contains exactly the right ingredients to protect a lawn over the autumn and winter months and reduce problems associated with cold weather/high rainfall. Since the goal of an autumn/winter fertiliser is to support healthy root growth, the feed has a low nitrogen content (only 3%) and is higher in phosphorous for root development and potassium for disease protection.

The combined feed/weed formulas should only be applied twice a year; they will damage your garden if used more frequently. However, lawn feed alone can be applied more often: up to every two weeks during the growing season unless the weather is very hot and dry. Sometimes my grass looks a little dull, and I just want to “green it up”, but that doesn’t mean I want to mow it three times a week. I have since found other products that improve the colour without making it grow like crazy. Products like iron sulphate work really well at turning brown or dull grass into a lush, green carpet. As lawn feeds go, this product is especially fast-acting. Results are often visible even sooner than the ‘5 days’ quoted by Miracle-Gro. That said, there are cases where this product hasn’t worked for everyone. Whether that’s due to grass type or weather conditions, results can vary lawn to lawn. Applied at the recommended a rate of 35 g /m², this 10 kg bag of lawn feed will cover approximately 285 m², suitable for most medium gardens.

It doesn’t contain anything specific to combat weeds, so if killing weeds alongside refreshing the lawn is a priority, this may not be the best lawn feed for that purpose. However, healthier lawns in general do stay more resistant to both weeds and moss. In terms of moss, within two weeks of applying the product, the moss will have died and be ready to rake. As with all moss killers, this may result in some sparse patches directly after raking; however, grass will soon spread into bare areas. Children and pets should be kept off the area until the granules have been watered in; a process that can be sped up by actively watering the garden instead of waiting for rainfall. However, to save water and time, this lawn feed can be applied when rain is imminent, allowing nature to take care of the after-care treatment.The main role of phosphorous is to direct the grass’s focus on root development rather than top growth. It’s an ideal nutrient in an autumn lawn feed, since you don’t want to have to mow your lawn over autumn/winter. Your lawn’s priority should be developing a robust root system, which will enable it to withstand autumn and winter stresses and access water and nutrients stored in the soil. There are a few benefits of buying a lawn feed with a built-in spreader: you have everything you need for application within the product itself, which helps you save money if you just want to fertilise your lawn on a one-off basis, and the spreader has been specifically designed for the product, so you shouldn’t have issues with the distribution. The powder simply needs to be diluted in a watering can for application. Either this, or it can be used with the Miracle-Gro Feeder hose attachment which needs to be bought separately – the attachment connects to your hose and allows the powder to be mixed with water as it comes out. Both methods work to create an even application of the product. As we mentioned above, the best autumn lawn food should have a higher potassium and phosphorous content than a spring/summer or year-round lawn fertiliser.
