UHD Blu-ray presentations of all three films across 3 Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs in Dolby Vision [HDR10 compatible] It’s not very often that a sequel to an action movie asks its hero to deal with the real world consequences of what they did in the first film. As Police Story 2 opens (well, following a montage of all the most awesome bits from the previous film), we find Chan Ka-kui demoted to traffic duty because of immense amounts his heroics cost the city in damages, and his old foe Chu Tao out on compassionate release, having been given months to live. Chu Tao’s goons threaten both Ka-kui and his still put upon girlfriend May (a returning Maggie Cheung), but his attention is soon taken up by a bomber threatening a major company. Officer Chan Ka Kui (Chan) is a detective in the Hong Kong police force and a member of “Operation Boar Hunt” a task force brought together to take down drug/crime lord Chu Tao (Chor Yuen, The Seventh Curse, Hong Kong Graffiti). Headed by Supt. Raymond Li (Kwok-Hung Lam, Project A 2), he sets up a sting for Tao who is holed up in a shanty town just outside Hong Kong.

Eureka Entertainment has already blessed us with a standard Blu-ray box set of the first two Police Story films. In my original review of Police Story 3, I stated it was absolutely crying out for a restoration and re-release. In fact, I still have my original VHS version so I can watch it uncut! Not only has my prayer been answered, it has been delivered in glorious, ultra-high definition 4K in this new box set!

The climactic mall pole slide sequence was filmed in one take, without any rehearsals or use of wires. Aside from the quality of the action, the extra features in this box set are very impressive. Just about every audio option you could wish for is available as well as various different cuts of each movie, and a selection of deleted and alternate scenes, some of which are debuting in the UK for the very first time. Jonathan Ross: “The Son of the Incredibly Strange Film Show” Hong Kong Theatrical Version – Brand new audio commentary with Asian film experts Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and F.J. DeSantoI am perhaps unusual among Western viewers, in that I’ve only ever seen this film in its uncut version, which here receives its first English friendly release, to my knowledge, since the Hong Kong Classics VHS. It is better known simply as Supercop, in the US cut released by Miramax, which stripped it of the context of its connection to the series. Ultimately, that’s probably okay. Unlike the previous film, Police Story 3 doesn’t ask Ka-kui to deal with the ramifications of his last adventure, and it takes him out of his usual environment, sending him on a special mission to partner with Interpol superintendent Yang (Michelle Yeoh) and take down a major drug dealer on the mainland. If you need any convincing about how good Police Story 3: Super Cop is, then know that Quentin Tarantino ranks the movie as one of the greatest action epics of all time, and who could argue with praise like that? The plot has returned to a simpler, more direct style but, unlike the first movie, there is actually a plot here, and one that gives its two leads a chance to shine with their fighting skills and their acting. If the first film is a masterclass, and the second an ambitious mixed bag, what Stanley Tong does with the series is find the pure fun of it. He substitutes overt comedy for the simple joy of watching two great stars, each at the peak of their estimable powers, enjoying sparring with each other, both literally and figuratively, and clearly having as much fun with the film they’re working on as they expect the audience to. It makes Police Story 3 an absolute pleasure to watch. With a reputation as the ‘supercop’ of the Hong Kong police force, Ka-Kui is sent to mainland China where he teams up with Red Chinese police Interpol director, Inspector Jessica Yang (Michelle Yeoh) to take down drug lord Chaibat (Kenneth Tsang). Ka-Kui and Yang go undercover and infiltrate Chaibat’s gang, gaining their trust and getting to the heart of the organisation. POLICE STORY 3: SUPERCOP (dir. Stanley Tong, 1992) – Action superstar Michelle Yeoh (EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE) joins the series as Inspector Yang Chien-Hua, who teams up with Chan Ka-Kui to take down an international drug ring. With some of the most outrageous stunt sequences ever committed to film, POLICE STORY 3: SUPERCOP is an action masterpiece that must truly be seen to be believed.

The 4K transfers don’t always have quite the pop of detail that the very best of the format can deliver, but make no mistake, these films look better here than they likely ever have. The picture is incredibly clean and detail is often spectacular. Even compared with the blu-ray releases (not included with this set), wide shots reveal a wealth of sharp detail that makes the stunt work look even more incredible and the explosions even more vivid.Secondary Audio: Cantonese DTS-HD MA 5.1 | Cantonese Stereo Home Video Mix LPCM 2.0 (Police Story 3) | Cantonese Dolby Atmos (Police Story 3) | English LPCM 1.0 On September 26, 2022, UK label Eureka is releasing the Police Story Trilogy on 4K UHD (Region Free).
