Voi sitä hypeä kun etelä-pohjanmaalaisen Kyrö Distilleryn Napue-gin julistettiin pari vuotta sitten kansainvälisellä tasolla parhaaksi giniksi gin toniciin. Vuonna 2015 Napue äänestettiin the International Wine & Spirit Competitionissa (IWSC) parhaaksi giniksi gin toniciin , ja vuonna 2016 palkinto tuli San Francisco World Spirit Competitionin premium-ginien sarjasta. Suomi mainittu – torille! Rukiista huolimatta Napue gin on valmistusmenetelmänsä ansiosta gluteeniton. 😉

Before they knew it, they had all quit their day jobs and were devoting themselves to the distillery full-time. It was a good thing, too: in 2015, Napue Gin, the distillery’s inaugural spirit, won ‘Best G&T’ at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in San Francisco. It has since gone on to win the coveted gold medal in the Contemporary Gin category.

A former dairy factory in Isokyrö is home to the Kyrö Distillery. Isokyrö itself is a mysterious place. Archeologists have found ancient human remains in the local Leväluhta well which turns red every spring. Weird.

Most discussions over a drink end the same way: ideas float around and then dissipate as the evening ends in the pleasant glow of smiles and friendly goodbyes. But when five friends – Miika, Miko, Mikko, Kalle and Jouni – met for a drink and a sauna one evening, it wouldn’t end with a glass of water and a headache the next morning. It would be the beginning of a new chapter in Finnish distilling. In 2016, Napue rye gin was given a gold medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition's premium gin series. [35] Far from squabbling over titles, parcelling out roles was easy. “It was surprisingly clear what everyone would do,” Miika says. In 2016, Juuri unaged rye whisky won a gold medal in the Whisky category of the International Spirit Awards (IWSC). [25] [26]

After many attempts at creating Napue Gin, Kyrö distillery decided to change their rye based gin recipe. The rye spirit was produced elsewhere, opposed to using their own malty base. Their malted and bready tones in the original base couldn’t deliver the perfect gin, the crisp flavors didn’t come true with malted rye. So, what’s next for the five best friends who founded Kyrö Distillery Company? They certainly aren’t standing still – in fact, this year the first rye whiskey from the distillery will be unveiled. It’s a moment that all five founders have been waiting for excitedly, but won’t mark the end of enthusiastic experimentation that goes on at their once abandoned dairy. Also on the list is a barrel-aged gin, and they’re constantly experimenting at their German copper still, turning out amazing new ideas under the Study range. To avoid any risk of falling out, the Kyrö founders agreed on a basic set of principles to live – and distil – by.

The bottling notes say it is “nose rich in meadow sweet, citrus, cumin and juniper”– hinting at a tangy and spicy flavour. Combined with the rye base, I’m expecting an earthy tone to the gin. Giving it a good sniff, it certainly smells earthy. Deep and cinnamon-y, it smells very nice. As Miika explains, “Five founders is a lot, so we sat down and thought about the values we wanted to further in the company and in our lives. Did we want to change the world in similar ways? We really did – we saw the world in the same way, and our goals were the same.” Iivanainen, Riikka (2017). He explains: “I think it's important for us because we are so fixated on rye. We need to be the best distillers working with it, because that's all we do, and there are a lot of fantastic uses for rye that haven’t yet been discovered." They also agreed to approach the world with trust, giving everyone – including each other – the benefit of the doubt. And, of course, they pledged never to take themselves too seriously.

Miika explains, “It’s a very usual experience here in Finland – the moment when you step out of the sauna in the summer, early in the morning and there’s dew on the grass. The smell and sensations of nature you would get in that moment are what we wanted to put into the gin.”

A nice whiff of juniper and fruit on the nose. On the palate, fruit, pine from the juniper and birch followed by citrus notes and a little jam before a punchy peppery finish. Mouthwateringly good. Napue won the inaugural Best G&T gin at the IWSC in 2015 and it’s easy to see why. Great mouth feel, great flavour and finish plus a 46% ABV means it stands up well mixed, but is also delicious over ice. Kyrö is best known for its Kyrö Gin, formerly known as Napue. Gin and tonic made with Napue gin won the Best Gin for the Gin & Tonic category at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in 2015. [18] [9] Following the award, Napue's production increased from the previously planned 23,000 bottles to 100,000 bottles in 2015. [10] [19]

Napue Gin, created by Kyrö Distillery in Ostrobothnia, Finland, won first place in the Gin & Tonic category at the International Wine & Spirit Competition organised in the UK.

Like many distillers before them, the challenges of cash-flow while whisky matures gave rise to the creation of gin. Experience has taught me that using spirit bases most generally associated with whisky production (like malt) when making gin, does not always create a positive outcome, with most tasting more like genever than anything else. After trying to create the base for the gin themselves without success, the Kyrö team sourced a 100% un-malted neutral rye spirit from elsewhere. The botanicals Besides the collaborative products, Kyrö makes Pink Gin. The gin gets its flavours from strawberries, lingonberries, and rhubarb and it stands for equality. [31] Hand Sanitizer [ edit ] It’s tangy on the front of the tongue, with a smokey taste lingering in your mouth. It’s ever so slightly sweeter than I thought it would be. Mixed with tonic the sweetness comes out a bit more. It’s quite drying, but this simply means you need another mouthful. Oh what a shame. This is a treat. It’s slightly more special than your standard gin, but ‘normal’ enough to have an evening of it. Plus a bit. Not too shabby for day 11. After a couple years of arm-wrestling with bureaucracy Kyrö Distillery strated the distilling process. The distillery is located in the municipality of Isokyrö in an old cheese factory approximately 5-hour drive Northeast of the capital Helsinki. The remote location with its Fäviken-like allure has become a big part of the story. The distillery hasn’t even released its first whisky and already they have somewhat of a cult status. The world's best gin for gin and tonic
