About this deal

and shares of his triumphs and failures as a contributing citizen to the war effort and in his reminiscing of his work as a vet in Darrowby before the war hit. Ich hatte diesen Band zuerst übersprungen, weil ich keinen Nerv auf düstere Kriegsgeschichten hatte. James experiences his own encounters, this time as the patient when the army sends him off to “The Butcher” to get some much-needed dental work. In this chapter, Herriot does the best he can, with what he has available, to put the Golden Retriever’s broken body back together. In the midst of World War II, James is training for the Royal Air Force, while going home to Yorkshire whenever possible to see his very pregnant wife, Helen.

He especially remembers his first winter there, when one of his clients is dressed like he is ill-prepared for the weather, even though James is bundled up. He gives it one last chance at life by using a risky drug, and this dog is the only one of the poisoned dogs who survives. During that wonderful time, I'd be beaten senseless by a kangaroo, held hostage by a love-struck chimpanzee, chased by angry hogs, and sat on by a miniature horse inside of a well-known celebrity's home. His books are always amusing, but some of the stories in this one had me tearing up, I was laughing so hard. He talks about homesickness, about missing his wife and worrying about the birth of their first child, and about being lonely and scared.

This time we have everything from dates shoved out the window (in an effort to hide from Siegfried that he wasn’t studying for exams), an unfortunate series of practical jokes played on a current girlfriend’s unwitting father, and Tristian’s memorable stint as the housekeeper and (most unfortunately) cook.

James takes his frustration out on Shep, not allowing him to scare him, but later sees that Shep is still himself, scaring a local tinker. There aren't any amusing anecdotes about Tricki Woo but there is a cute story about a Scottish Terrier and Tristan. This arrangement became widely associated with the hymn after it was included in Songs of Praise (hymnal). While he is known for his wonderful writing about animals, I often think of his ability to capture people. He also renamed Donald Sinclair and his brother Brian Sinclair as Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, respectively. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. For a particularly whiplash-inducing experience, I listened to this book on audiobook during the same week that I read The Nightmare Stacks in hardcover, a weird scifi/fantasy invasion story that also just so happened to be set in the Yorkshire Dales. It consists of a series of stanzas that elaborate upon the clause of the Apostles' Creed that describes God as "maker of heaven and earth", and has been described as asserting a creationist view of the natural world. I read the children’s books to my children over and over again and we have visited the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire and the James Herriot Museum, which we loved.

For the 1970 science fiction film Beneath the Planet of the Apes, composer Leonard Rosenman composed a discordant version of the hymn, rewritten for a dystopian cult who worship a nuclear bomb. All Things Wise and Wonderful doesn't flow quite as well as the previous books, because Herriot relates his anticlimactic experience in the RAF during the war.
