Jan Morris seems to be trying to arrange or reconcile some aspects of her own life through her meditations on Trieste. this is an addition,if possible, to my recent review of "Forbidden Bread" : Anybody interested in customs, everyday life and travel in Slovenia, first lady's Melania Trump homeland, should read this book. Then, in the second half, she suddenly swings back around to an acceptably intelligent political-cultural-historical assessment, tells some interesting anecdotes about some interesting people and their lives in Trieste, and the book seemed to get deeper into Trieste as a place in these sections. Each chapter is also prefaced by a photograph, sometimes referred to directly in the following text, sometimes illustrative of an aspect of the chapter. They are exiles in their own communities, because they are always in a minority, but they form a mighty nation, if they only knew it.

Thankfully, I have a fair bit of Joyce under my belt and have read Burton’s translation of The Book of the Thousand and One Nights (and, yes, all the footnotes!For Morris, Trieste was the place to which she was transported when some random moment summoned it in her mind. Since she first visited it as a soldier at the end of the Second World War Trieste has haunted Morris and she has written widely about it. Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal.The final part of that second sentence made me think of Shamima Begum, the teenager from Bethnal Green in London who travelled to Syria to join the Islamic State/Daesh and who subsequently had her British citizenship, one of six types of British nationality recognised by the UK Government, stripped from her.
