About this deal

I have not been this emotionally invested in a book in ages, and the lack of sleep I suffered after staying up late to finish it was well worth it.

Over breakfast, Gladys tried to explain to me how most of the men in the county saw joining the Klan as a civic duty. For good reason, birds are emblematic of the morning — that's when many are most vocal — but some species find their voice after dark, and listening to these birds chirping at night can be a uniquely enchanting (or eerie) experience. Gohlke’s efforts to address real-life issues and the evils of racism is laudable and shows religious truths in this Christian historical-fiction novel.Brutal family revelations are threaded with passages from Oswald Chambers’s devotionals, which steer Lilliana toward finding renewed strength. Light romance with a dashing Reverend, who keeps a respectful distance, promises Lilliana a hopeful future.

Cathy Gohlke hits it out of the park with her newest novel that talks about tough topics and reveals experiences near and dear to her heart. It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. Because their timing is based largely on light levels, robins can be easily fooled by electric lights, and constant singing comes with the consequence of overexertion. Cathy Gohlke has written another masterful story, diving deep into the secrets of small-town Appalachia. Liliana passes away and she mourns not only for her but for the abusive relationship with her Father and her own husband. After the death of her precious mother and on the cusp of WWII, Lilianna Swope runs away from an abusive situation to her Aunt Hyacinth in Appalacia. My heart broke for Lilliana's pain and the abuse she had suffered, and then soared when she found a home with Aunt Hyacinth. However, Granny Chree, a Black herbalist and wise woman who pushes Lilliana about her wavering faith, falls into troubling tropes. While they aren't exactly nocturnal, unpaired males may sing 24 hours a day in the breeding season—spring to early summer—especially during a full moon.

This chilling, violent sequence culminates in explosive truths about blame, with a fitting twist on conventional justice. It is less sweet than a robin's song, and lower-pitched and less powerful than the blasts of a wren. She brings an innocence to the story, speaking straightforwardly, and at times acting impulsively but always out of love. But, most of all, I loved the reminders that God hates abuse, and that His truth and the perfect sacrifice of His Beloved, Jesus Christ are the *only* things that can ever hope to save us from our own hatred and sin. Read on about these birds and their beautiful-if-eerie songs so that next time a hidden minstrel bewitches you, you might just know the artist. My favourite character was Celia Percy and I'm glad to see there is another book where she will be featuring. But she soon learns that while No Creek might be a temporary respite from everything and everyone that she left behind, the small community is steeped in prejudice, the kind that burns crosses in front yards and hides behind white hoods.
