About this deal

I've done some very cold, wet, winter races, and none of my toes have fell off (yet), wearing nothing more than a standard pair of Inov8 or Bridgedale socks, perhaps a pair of merino Inov8 socks if it's exceptionally cold. Yeah, Sealskinz were pretty much essential on the Dark Mountains and, for me, any long winter activities. I don't know if the creases in polybags round a foot would cause blisters if running, perhaps not with socks between them and skin. You have hit upon one of the biggest forum debate topics--trail runners or boots, , but everyone agrees that everyone's feet are different!

If it’s cool, the Randy Sun Cold Weather Socks are a great value, and when it’s cold enough that you are questioning your sanity, the Gill Boot Socks are great, with another sock under it if there is room. I hardly ever wear boots any more, and have completed 50+ mile hikes multi-day hikes in my beloved Merrells. Injinji toe socks - the thin liner socks - go well under any sock at any time of year, though the Dexshells are extremely comfortable by themselves - wore them yesterday on Fairfield!Stupid I know, but I got the second pair because I just couldn't believe how bad the first pair were! Try an alternative brand of no doubt expensive trainers and maybe have wet feet after a while, maybe not - maybe be happy, maybe be sad….

And even then, many of what I think of as 'nice' runs involve water well over the top of any shoes/socks, so it all become somewhat academic! Mine are a few years old and have lasted well, but probably largely because they only get a handful of uses each year (mainly at the Dark Mountains - notice a theme here? So considering all the above comments then, what would people wear on their feet if they were going to run/walk for say, between 4 and 12 hours, say marathon to ultra, unsupported so just a small running pack, in winter over wet terrain? I used to wonder round the N Pennines, which can be remarkably wet and boggy, and always remained dry footed.I wear them in my clipless shoes when biking when it is cold or wet and I think they are magic for that. With a dry suit they are warm in any conditions, but because of the constant squeeze they are not as comfortable as more conventional shoes and don’t really work with orthotic shoes. Hija, I worked for Sealskinz for many, many years - indeed was shown the first prototype sock - and sold 1000's of pairs of socks and gloves in my time. Not only was I going to ride the puddle, I planned on stopping and fully emerging my feet and shoes into it.
