About this deal

un libro struggente e al tempo stesso intrigante, il racconto di vite che si intrecciano e si mescolano, di sorrisi e lacrime amare. Dr Caroline Cauchi worked as a university lecturer for several years before turning her hand to fiction. With her husband's death six months after Vincent's, Van Gogh-Bonger was determined to carry on her husband's efforts to establish Vincent's importance as an artist, but she also worked to demonstrate her husband's crucial role in supporting Vincent's life as an artist. I wasn't so keen on the bizarre triangle created between Theo, Johanna and Vincent because Vincent 's behaviour was often so strange that I could not understand why Johanna would go along with his whims, putting herself repeatedly into compromising situations. First off – the book is written in the present tense and first person which allows the author to put thoughts and words into the mouth of people dead and gone.

I happen to be a lover of Vincent Van Gogh's work and have read enough to know something of his sister-in-law Johanna and how she was instrumental in bringing Vincent’s work to the public. She also stayed in touch with Émile Bernard, who helped her to promote Vincent van Gogh's paintings. Da estimatrice di Van Gogh non potevo esimermi, e infatti sono venuta a conoscenza di molte cose, alcune anche un po' scomode. Publication of the letters helped spread the compelling mystique of Vincent van Gogh, the intense and dedicated painter who suffered for his art and died young.

But twenty-eight-year-old Joanna Van Gogh-Binger, Vincent's sister-in-law and keeper of his immense collection of paintings, sketches and letters, has, until now, been written out of history. Johanna elbowed her way into a man’s world to secure her spot among a handful of female art dealers of her time and left Vincent van Gogh’s art legacy to the world. After Vincent’s death and then Theo’s six months later she became the owner of most of Vincent’s artwork including paintings, sketches and his letters. Jo, becoming pregnant helps to bring the couple closer together and their son is born, young Vincent.

Throughout the story Jo goes through tumultuous emotions as she comes to grips with the family she has married into.Eleven years later, his work was being exhibited around the world and his reputation as a great artist was established. This book is a creative account of the remarkable woman who became the guardian of Vincent’s legacy. In our conversation, Caroline explains what drew her to Johanna, what new insights she learned into Vincent, the photograph that inspired it all, and so much more. Because despite this what Carline does is give Johanna a voice and her fictional account is entertaining and believable. At the time of her death, she was still engaged in translating 526 of Vincent's letters into English.
