In my experience of several series of books I find that the author doesn't do enough to keep the sparkle alive within each book but this is definitely something that Louise has mastered. On this occasion, both the setting and the plot of the story reminded me of the incomparable Agatha Christie. It was definitely less dark than the previous installments, which I appreciated, but the mystery itself wasn't quite as intriguing.

Having had to relocate Ryan and Anna are temporarily living in a cottage within the grounds of Cragside. Her eleventh novel, The Infirmary, is a prequel story to the DCI Ryan series and is available as a major Audible Originals audio-drama starring Tom Bateman, Kevin Whately, Bertie Carvel, Hermione Norris and Alun Armstrong. At times it felt rather like an Agatha Christie novel with a murder taking place when the lights went off and a murder takes place and we then meet a cast of potential suspects for Ryan and his team to investigate!I’m really enjoying following his story and his relationship with Anna (even if I’m a wee bit jealous of her). There is another thing that had me chuckling but that was on a personal level as a name came up that is oh so familiar to me but was still fun to actually see in print.

On a side note, one of the things that I've enjoyed about this Ryan and Anna's story is the lack of OP drama. I feel like I’ve really gotten to know these characters over this series, they’re so realistic and you can’t help caring for them. There is also someone from Ryan’s past that has come back into his life of which I am dying to read more about and where the author is going to take us with that particular story line. Having managed to visit Cragside a couple of times on our annual holidays in Northumberland I have been looking forward to reading this book as I knew the setting would be just perfect and being able to picture the places mentioned helped me to connect more and bring the book to life.

Throughout the book when things were happening I kept trying to guess who I thought the killer was, although characters seem “honest” you just can’t always trust them. When a game of murder mystery takes a serious turn and a man is found dead, Ryan realises all is not as it seems. The start of the book did make me smile despite the dead body, purely due to the banter between Anna, Ryan and Frank about the costume that Ryan was wearing to the event and it truly does show the closeness between them all despite status and rank.
