About this deal

For us, most of the answers to these questions were simply “ no” because all we wanted was something basic and, most importantly, reliable.

Along the top of the screen you can see the signal strength, whether it’s in night vision mode or not, battery life, and the room’s temperature.

Infant Optics claims the Pro has a 50% better signal range than the previous version; popping up the antenna on the monitor helps with that. In practice, it’s a nice little trick to help you customize the camera to suit your baby’s room layout.

With this monitor I can plug it in and leave it next to the bed while he sleeps, check the screen to see if he’s okay if I hear noises, or even just turn off the screen and use it like any other audio monitor. If noise reduction from the parent unit is your number one priority, then by all means the DXR-8 Pro is the baby monitor for you. This monitor cost a lot less then other sites, shipped much faster then expected and paired perfectly with the existing camera. This became especially irritating when my baby started sleeping through the night and I was woken up by a shrill beep of the monitor, only to see my newborn snoozing peacefully. Unless you are looking to pay more for additional options of a traditional monitor that also uses an app to view remotely and a larger screen like the newly released Kodak Cherish C525 you cannot go wrong with Infant Optics. With everything connected to the internet these days, finding a good non-Wi-Fi video monitor was actually pretty challenging, but I'm happy with the choice I made in the Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor. The monitor is rated to have a battery life of about 10 hours on a full charge with the screen on standby, or six hours if you leave the video playing. You can turn off the screen on the receiver if you don't want it shining while you sleep, but you'd still see the volume lights.

Using John’s house (3 stories including the basement) as an example, even when it is working as advertised, the DXR-8 left you severely restricted. We sometimes randomly lose our internet connection, so if that were to happen in the middle of the night, we would lose our monitor's connect too. It comes with additional interchangeable lenses and both the camera and receiving unit are small, lightweight, easy to travel with (and just as easy to set up and use). The screen is great, the options are easy to navigate, and being able to manipulate the angle from the control screen grants excellent peace of mind. It’s obvious to us at Fathercraft that the DXR-8 is long past its prime, still coasting on an out-of-date reputation, supported by a serious lack of awareness about just how good the new best baby monitors perform. The monitor unit is identifiable by the word "DXR-8" written in white on the top left corner, with a screen in the center and buttons off to the right side. The picture quality on the display itself is about average with a resolution of 320 pixels by 240 pixels. We can also see that he stays awake staring up at the ceiling for a while after we leave the room, behavior the older model never clearly displayed.

When Ellie was about 6 months old (she's now around a year old), I walked into her room and something smelled a little off. Night vision is a little darker than average, but the zoom feature helps make things clearer and more evenly lit. Additional features include a thermometer that monitors the temperature of the baby’s room in either celsius or Fahrenheit (although we wish it would alert us if the room is too hot or too cold) and automatic invisible infrared night vision (but no night light). It also comes with an additional zoom lens to increase camera placement options, which is something unique to the Infant Optics monitors.

It’s not necessarily fancy, but I didn’t want it to be; like many parents, I preferred a radio-frequency-enabled (or closed-loop) monitor over a smarter, Wi-Fi-enabled one because of security concerns. Volume and brightness controls have also been added to this larger unit, which make life easier for the parent. Maybe the only downside reported by testers was a choppiness to the pan of the camera after a few weeks of continued use.
