Sometimes names were changed (as when Aphrodite became Venus or Odysseus Ulysses); sometimes they were actually spelled differently (as when Asclepius became Aesculapius); sometimes no changes at all were made, so that stories with a particular Green location (such as the spring of Hippocrene near Thebes, created when the winged horse Pegasus stamped his hoof on a rock) were accepted quite happily by people who had never otherwise heard of, or seen, the originals. The myths are intentionally split apart to better focus on the individual parts and so it doesn’t flow. I found this book to be an excellent bedtime read, the myths are more straightforward, not as cluttered as Graves.

Graves seems to lean heavily on saga, which I appreciated since I recently read the Iliad and the Odyssey.I always get confused about the entangled familial/sexual relationships, so about halfway through the names began to blur a bit. This book was first released in 1996 and it is a fairly scholarly study of the myths, relating them to the way the ancient Greeks lived and thought. In addition to his numerous film and television credits, he has written 4 novels, an introduction to poetry, The Ode Less Travelled (2005), and 3 volumes of his bestselling autobiography, Moab Is My Washpot (1997), The Fry Chronicles (2010) and More Fool Me (2014). He traces the lineage of the symbolism of each story back to pre-Olympian cults and even some mythologies from other parts of Europe.
