I've managed to get through this review without mentioning magical realism (and now I've gone and ruined it). At Tres Marias, in his capacity as the hacienda's patron, Esteban's brutality and cruelty are brought into sharp focus.She appeals to Esteban to use his political influence to help find asylum for Pedro outside Chile so the three of them can be a family. The House of the Spirits is a captivating novel by Isabel Allende that delves into the intricacies of family, politics, and the supernatural. House of the Spirits through its highs and lows will always keep its place as one of my favorite books read. This review is somewhat on the hoof since I’d actually planned to review one of my new reads, ‘Labyrinth’ by Kate Mosse.

Instead, each lengthy chapter consists mostly of description and narration laid out in huge, gangly paragraphs that perch upon the page, waiting leap out at unsuspecting readers and swallow them whole. Esteban Trueba is the one who stuck with me the most as an example of Allende’s excellent characterization.
