About this deal

The midsection of the book however became a catalogue of her Swanky Modes design collections and lacked the intimacy that made the other parts of the book so endearing. Esme is clearly a private person, despite some funny shocking reveals, she still so vividly depicts Central Saint Martin, friendship, and work passion. I always thought it would be brilliant to go out partying with Esme and nothing I have read has disabused me of this notion. Like many, I was first introduced to Esme Young via the Great British Sewing Bee, where she is a judge along with Patrick Grant.

Such an interesting life and clearly a wonderful woman, thoroughly enjoyed finding out all about her life, family and Swanky Modes! Fascinating if you’re a follower of the industry, but I can imagine that it’s also a really good autobiography for anyone having grown up in that same era - and some fab name drop clangs that nobody can resent along the way! A list of what things she had done and I did not consider it self effacing at all as others have described it. Their clothes were out there, just at a time in the early 70s when people were looking for out there, and when punk was just around the corner (Esme and the gang were at the heart of this, and it's the bit of the book that I hoovered up, it brought so many evocative memories of myself in those days and my early attempts to create something a bit out there to wear . I am quite nosey about people and it interests me to find out how people have arrived where they are and that's how I decided to read this book. While watching the last series of Sewing Bee I said to my parents “I wish Esme would bring a book out, she’s had an amazing life by the sounds of it!

Esme is over 70 now and has lived a fascinating and creative life, there’s just not enough pages for her to go into great depth but gives you just enough. Esme and the gang were at the heart of the 70s when people were looking for “out there”, and when punk was around the corner. The writing is so good in the sense that you do feel she is sat right opposite you telling you her stories, and her cheeky humour really comes alive too which I love! Esme's career spans a lifetime of creativity from working on films, pop videos to adverts and catwalks.
