About this deal

What was it that took you down that path of publishing, and what kind of benefits do you think it grants you as the author? Once again, Angus King’s narration was superb so I thoroughly recommend the audiobook if you don’t mind all the swearing. When I was learning about self-publishing I joined a couple of Facebook groups, and I got involved in those. The Hoon stories on the other hand are proving just as dark and brutal as Smith’s, and this one maybe even more so. Took me 3 weeks to read half the book and just an hour to finish the last half day time reading is probably my best time .

And when my first Space Team book came out, a couple of people in that group who I’d not necessarily helped but who had seen me help others out, shared it, said check this new book out, and it just built from there. We set up a limited company, contacted foreign rights sales agents, TV rights agents, we’ve now got a PR company involved. He swore he’d never set foot there again, but almost four decades after he left, Bob Hoon is finally going home. This book has an almost cinematic feel (the inspiration is very obviously Die Hard), mixing as it does action (there are some great one on one fights), humour, bad language, exploding bodies and entrails, a showdown with the main bad guy, and a huge amount of blood.

Don’t be fooled though Hoon is (and most likely always will be) the loudest and foulest mouthed of all! I want to warn readers that this story is violent, bloody, brutal and full of language, the language just as strong as the others, and if not more violent, by far more gory. Hoon is looking forward to a quiet Christmas at home sniping at his big sister Berta who has moved in with him after the events of Westward. Reading through the lines was stressful because the narrative lacked mystery and was more like an action movie script. They were quite mixed, it was half going, ‘I absolutely hate this character and skip over all his scenes’, and the other half going, ‘I love him, he’s the greatest character I’ve ever read’.Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site. Then when people were asking about merchandise, I had all the rights, so I did T-shirts, mugs, and we were able to exploit audio fully, because a lot of my books the audio rights were with the publishers but they never did anything with them. A larger than life bully with a penchant for bad language, Hoon was a deliberately over the top caricature—a barely human monster who existed largely to make the lives of the other characters that bit more difficult. Conversely, I haven’t read the Jack Logan books (that these are a spin-off from) and don’t think that mattered - although of course now I fully intend to, as Kirk’s humour is right up my street. They are a wonderful mixture of action and comedy (with a lot of swearing and gore, but so worth it) and they just get better as the series progresses.

When I first introduced the then Detective Superintendent Bob Hoon in my DCI Logan crime fiction series, he was so foul-mouthed and unpleasant as to feel almost irredeemable. The man is nothing if not persistent, and before long I had stopped thinking about whether it was possible for readers to root for him, and had started thinking about the how. If you haven't read this or the previous three, please give them a go, you really are in for a treat. If you haven’t read Northwind, Southpaw, Westward and Eastgate, do yourself a favour and get stuck in. This is a bit of a Christmas crossover special, so if you are a fan of the DCI Logan series then some of your faves will make an appearance here too. Well, we needed some disposables for a distraction to hide our real mission, and a bunch of cellar dwelling numb-nut troll virgins who couldn't get a date in a brothel were the perfect candidates! When I wrote a second one then the sales of the first book skyrocketed, and by the time I wrote the third one I was earning more in one day on these three books than I was in six months on all my traditionally published books combined.
