Over the years Aberfeldy has been awarded over 150 Gold Medals, so this is clearly a distillery with the Midas touch. The distillery is located on the eastern outskirts of Aberfeldy, on the southern bank of the upper Tay. The long years of maturation in carefully selected oak casks have bestowed upon Aberfeldy 21 Year Old an incredible depth and balance. This aging process gives the whisky a smooth and balanced flavor with notes of honey, vanilla, and dried fruits. This whisky has been matured in a combination of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon oak casks for 21 long years before bottling at 40%. I always marvelled at this wonderful sounding spirit and never drank the original until some years later when I became an officer myself and whilst that was a little bit too smooth for my palate, I determined that it was a pleasant single malt. Aberfeldy whiskies are characterized by their golden hue and a smooth, honeyed sweetness that is emblematic of the Highland style.
It was a potential easy win for the bottle with eager, excited drinkers waiting to pour out the first drams but it was not to be. We'll send them to be recycled and you'll save paper, carbon emissions and time at the recycling centre!
