One of my favorite examples of this kind of cinematic absurdity done right is Kevin Smith’s controversial horror-comedy Tusk, a divisive feature that’s almost equally loved and hated by the horror community. Your enjoyment of the flick will likely depend on how accepting you are of the director’s particular brand of humor, but this is a deeply weird story that only gets better with age.

But, as anyone who has ever revisited a childhood favorite knows, some “classics” can turn into complete and total shit 20 years on.Maybe it has something to do with a lack of practical makeup in most modern horror films, at least those of a mid-range budget. Fortunately, my re-examination of the gory 1983 sci-fi/horror oddity The Deadly Spawn was not one of those movies that lost its appeal.

Time and a vocal fanbase have elevated the endeavor to cult status, celebrating its schlocky appeal and ferocious monsters, but there's really nothing to "The Deadly Spawn" beyond some ingenious special effects and a few formidable visits to the gore zone. The movie was a major hit with audiences and critics alike and opened up the floodgates for aliens to be monsters again. What goes around always seems to come around again, and it may not be long before we find ourselves watching strange creatures from beyond the stars wreak havoc on small, unassuming towns. Botched euthanasia means Shakma is unwittingly unleashed on Sorenson and the group of students he’s gathered for a live-action role-playing game. Look past the phallic fiend and here's a comatose effort that's hardly making an effort to provide characters worth cheering on, while the central otherworldly threat is a vaguely defined pest that seems entirely avoidable.

They could at least be more transparent and give us updates on previously announced releases from years ago. With Hellbound: Hellraiser’s Tony Randel in the director’s seat and Brian Yuzna attached as executive producer, you know to expect something icky, oozy, and fantastical. The Deadly Spawn" is one of those no-budget horror pictures crafted by filmmakers who love horror pictures that just barely classifies as a horror picture. His intentions are endearing, but his moviemaking inexperience is ruthlessly underlined throughout the picture.

Thanks to Netflix, many of these movies are now accessible to virtually everyone, whereas many have been sought-after collector’s items in the past—particularly in the early days of DVD when everything was new. In a script that’s not that great, it does the critical thing that matters most in a creature feature. But there were also original movies trying to recapture the success of the old B-Movies their directors grew up watching.
