About this deal

As Ava is roped into Winnie's world of counterfeiting, the focus isn't on heists and scams as much as it is on a marriage going sour, the tedium of parenting, and the joy of a secret. Ava very quickly going forward became the driving force behind the business and entered it with her eyes wide open. Make no mistake, “Counterfeit” is an entertaining, luxurious read — but beneath its glitz and flash, it is also a shrewd deconstruction of the American dream and the myth of the model minority. There is also a fascinating twist toward the middle of the novel that shifts the tone and energy and much more.

She put her career as a lawyer on hold be a stay at home mom for her young son who is a bit of a handful. One of the things I love about the reading experience is coming across characters whom I am able to relate to in some way (even if our life circumstances are completely different) and that certainly was the case here — this makes the time and effort spent reading this all the more worthwhile. e.: the pressure to choose a “prestigious” career path that ultimately leads to wealth, even if it’s not a career that I would want for myself (this quote sent shivers down my spine because it’s almost verbatim what I experienced: “ …in my family there were only a few acceptable paths—law, medicine, engineering. In fact I was pleasantly surprised by how detailed the book was, how much story and explanation we got.I love to read and review various genres with a focus on contemporary fiction, historical fiction with some mysteries/thrillers and also select nonfiction and memoirs. I don’t usually choose my books by recommendations from celebrities or book clubs (or both), but I’ve noticed that I enjoy quite a few of Reese Witherspoon’s recommendations. But beneath this façade, Ava’s world is crumbling: her marriage is falling apart, her expensive law degree hasn’t been used in years, and her toddler’s tantrums are pushing her to the breaking point. As a strait-laced, rule-abiding Chinese American lawyer with a successful surgeon as a husband, a young son, and a beautiful home–she’s built the perfect life. I was already having an enjoyable time when the author shifted gears somewhat and that just took the book to the next level. But inevitably, things don’t go quite according to plan and much of the narrative is Ava telling her story to the police - willingly in an effort to avoid jail time. The sparkling storyline seduces with its compelling twists and turns even as Kirstin Chen deftly interrogates issues of race, identity, wealth and consumerism. With all that said though, this wasn’t just a superficial story about a counterfeit handbag business gone awry. The story takes an almost satirical look at modern day consumerism, including the use-and-throw culture and brand fetishes.

She keeps her friend company but is also there to assist with Ava’s son who forms quite an attachment to her. S. passport to help manage her business—someone who’d never be suspected of wrongdoing, someone like Ava. Regaling the detective with her story of being at Stanford and her fobby and irritating roommate Winnie, we follow the trajectory of her life and family background, Ava’s position as a hard-working, straight laced daughter of Chinese immigrants adjusts to the ruthless business of producing, exchanging, and selling counterfeit superfake designer bags. The way the story was structured, plus the fast pace of the plot, definitely made for a fascinating read! It is not quite what the marketing copy claims, not glitter and diamonds, it is much more rooted in realism and the everyday, even if Ava has a charmed (but miserable) life.Chen’s third novel is sly and subversive, an examination of motherhood and an incisive look at culture and class . I always enjoy reading about the filthy rich and seeing the very different ways they live their lives and how that alters their mentality. A provocative story of fashion, friendship, and fakes (in more ways than one), with characters that both subvert and capitalize on the model-minority myth.

As a strait-laced, rule-abiding Chinese American lawyer with a successful surgeon as a husband, a young son, and a beautiful home, she’s built the perfect life. I loved the main character development (though you need to have a lot of patience to discover the development.

As a strait-laced, rule-abiding Chinese American lawyer with a successful surgeon as a husband, a young son, and a beautiful home—she's built the perfect life. Kirstin’s second novel Bury What We Cannot Take, published in 2018, is set against the backdrop of early Maoist China and follows a mother, father, brother and sister as they grapple with an agonizing decision and attempt to flee mainland China. I think this book was wasted on me as l don’t know a LV from a Sainsbury carrier bag but it doesn’t hi light the obscene conditions children work in to satisfy greedy rich women. It is no surprise that she can't avoid getting involved with her one-time college roommate Winnie when she suddenly reappears. She was therefore vulnerable when Winnie, once a ‘fobby’ (denouncing her as fresh off the boat) now beautiful, confident and wealthy, blackmailed Ava into becoming involved in the business of importing and selling counterfeit luxury goods.
