It was surprising how few people ever learned to follow the arrow and instead stood there gripped by a sort of dumb enchantment, pounding stupidly on my private door.It is so very late 50's, from the dialogue pattering as easy and funny and sharp as a Gene Kelly – Donald O'Connor dance routine, to Laura Manion's tight sweaters, to the big old chrome-and-fins cars you just know everyone's driving. An intelligent courtroom drama, full of intense dialog, still cited for its realistic portrayal of our legal system in action.

Seconds later two police cars followed in hot pursuit, sirens away, the last one pausing long enough to pick up Jack, who leapt in like a boy. One thing I like is when a book hooks me quickly and this book did just that, after a few minutes I found myself looking for opportunities to listen.While certain mores have changed since the book was originally published—(thankfully) a woman can now dance barefoot without scandal—the drama surrounding crimes of passion, especially a murder, remains immutable. This is the kind of entertainment that is difficult to come by - enjoyable while raising the standard of expectations. He needs a case; he's not the only defense attorney in his small Michigan town, and the other one's flashier; his secretary, Maida (the perfect 50's secretary, sassy and efficient both), would like to be paid her salary, thank you.
