About this deal

Whilst yes, he did talk about this, he's going by his experiences and then telling you to interpret them and he does state this a few times in the book. Likes: Simple language, split into interesting categories, good reminder of some topics such as Carol Dweck’s mindset concept. It’s time to reassess and decide in the end will you look back and say working 60 hours a week was so important?

a communication chapter and how to talk to people just seemed to bang on about social media following, not hugely useful for the average person looking to sort their life out. James Smith is back to challenge everything you thought you knew about the path to fulfilment and happiness.

All in all an incredibly bland listen from a stereotypical personal trainer, providing absolutely no original thoughts or highlights. The book is a cheese fest of 'perfect world' advice about always do what you want to do, live how you want to live, and reeks of a young man's thoughts on the world who has no children, no commitments and has made it good relatively quickly so has never lived in the real world. I loved James first book and I follow the podcasts and Instagram so I was really looking forward to this book but very disappointed. Meditation and mental health were great chapters but the ones that hit home was mindset and motivation.

Just that "Don't compare yourself to others" "Know your values, what you want and what you don't want" He shares a lot of his own life-experiences and interests as well, making it come across like part memoir, part self-help too. Not everyone can understand the laws of physics, martial arts and mathematics, all 3 hobbies that Smith definitely shares a lot of knowledge about and I percieve it he is passionate about all subjects too. I quickly realized that I’m not the target audience for this book, and that influenced my perception of the material. A lot of the things are something I do agree with, such as looking at negativity and thinking of how much energy we waste in worrying about things. Found a few interesting ideas such as James' philosophy on social media use but the majority of this book can be summarized as poor regurgitation of original personal development bestsellers such as "4-hour workweek", "Atomic Habits", "The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck" etc.Yet at the same time, Smith focuses a lot of providing stories about himself and relates that to how it can help you, which is neither good nor bad, but I believe it would have been better for him to more frequently have the reader in mind instead of himself. Sometimes I think we just need a little reminder of things aren’t as we always perceive them and this book was good at that. It’s rich telling people that being a millionaire isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when you are a millionaire. Some of the aspects in the book were interesting and actually made me look at situations in my life differently.

It gets worse when there is a chapter titled “fucking” where the author brags about hitting his “century” (for those of you who have been spared the painful explanation in the book, a “century man” is someone who has slept with at least 100 different women). From his Facebook Lives with Brian the bird in Bondi to a brief stint as a JSA member during the first Bali competition where I learned all I need to know to maintain and improve my fitness level. No you might not be able to just up and leave country at this given moment, but if you so desperately want to you can plan to make that happen. Most of the positive psychology anecdotes have been written time and time again and by better authors. This book would have been better titled “Not a Life Coach - Ramblings of a Privileged Middleclass White Man” I am astonished this book got as far as being published. Possibly a good gateway personal development book for someone who doesn't read non fiction but I felt there was nothing new or noted information or even memorable stories.
