About this deal

I briefly reviewed them at the following link, but since then I have used them considerably on varying terrain and for long, short and middle distances and would thoroughly recommend them. But this translates to a more supportive boot as well, and the rubber toe rand is also a nice addition, something the Scarpas lacked. The initial press information on the boots suggested that they were slightly more flexible than would be produced for a continental market, but they’re still more than man enough to cater for those who prefer a bit of underfoot stiffness on rough terrain, with a fairly traditional feel to them rather than being a scaled up trainer, if that makes sense. Thanks and don’t forget to drop a comment below if you have any thoughts on our Mammut Women’s Brecon III GTX® Walking Boot review. They are fully gortex lined and if you ensure you do your laces up correctly and tuck the tongue in as you are doing so you won't have any issues at all.

I’ll admit they did take a little bit of breaking in, and on first outings they did feel a bit clunky and stiff, and I have encountered the odd blister in them, but that aside for the performance and feature set they are very good indeed. There is extra strength and reinforcement at the toe and around the heel to keep the foot in place, and memory foam around the ankle and the tongue for a softer and personalised fit and feel around the foot.

Gortex lined so waterproof anyway but I gave them a spray of water repellant and this adds to the protection. However, if you’re still on the fence and want to look at some more options, here are some great alternatives to consider. However, I am glad I did as the Mammut Trovat Guide II High GTX Hiking Boot is excellent and if not better boot than the last. I have noticed that because of the lugs and the spacing, the tread does get a bit clogged up with mud and stones so this needs to be scraped out maybe more than usual, but this is a minor inconvenience really. Designed for easy backpacking or the occasional alpine trek, they are supportive and comfortable enough for all-day wear, with integrated Mammut Motion-Control which gives great flexibility and strong lateral support.

There will be some products that are amazing quality and packed full of additional features or specifications, but do take the time to really get an idea if you need that level of quality or if your budget and needs mean you should get something else. This is because with many shoe materials, the pores are still open and so better to penetrate with the waterproofing. These were to be my -serious- hiking boots, for when I had the time and was in the country for multiday backpacking trips. Being compatible with walking crampons is beneficial as I can opt to wear these boots when enjoying gentle winter mountaineering days instead of wearing my larger, more aggressive alpine mountaineering boots. Disappointed that tongue is not leather and made of gortex which I am assuming is where the water comes in. Weight for our test 43s – size 9 – is around 1570 grammes, so not ‘lightweight’, but equally not massively heavy for a mountain-walking, three-season boot either. Designed for easy backpacking or the occasional alpine trek, they are supportive and comfortable enough for all-day wear, with integrated Mammut® Motion-Control which gives great flexibility and strong lateral support. They have a grippy, cushioning and perfectly rolling Vibram(R) MT Traction sole, a waterproof GORE-TEX(R) Performance Comfort Footwear membrane, and cushioning memory foam around the tongue and ankle. So to the boots themselves – the uppers are a sort of smooth suede leather, apparently full grain, kind of like a nubuck sort of fabric and are pretty hard-wearing and supple enough to flex naturally with movement. I regularly scramble in my walking boots, making it essential to protect the shoe from damage from boulders or crossing scree. It’s manufactured in Romania by the way, a country which is developing a growing reputation for boot making.
