About this deal

Her parents had planned on going on a trip and dropping her off to her uncle's house, but upon hearing the news of Jay, they tell her they will cancel and stay with her. Thankfully, she dropped out just before the point where all students must submit to the personality-removing process that is a compulsory part of being an esteemed member of the legal profession. Jay was a beloved friend who could have become a beloved boyfriend and the missed chance is what propels Sophie to put herself in danger, despite her better judgement.

This is a proper old school horror, it is YA so no extreme gore or violence but it is still chillingly spooky. From this pulse-quickening beginning the story does not let up any of its pace until the final page if turned.

This book just continues to be creepy and atmospheric, and there were several instances when my anxiety kicked in because I was nervous about what was going to happen. But they left something behind…Sophie arrives at the old schoolhouse to spend the summer with her cousins. So determined, in fact, that she recklessly leaps into action every single time a creepy noise or sensation occurs. After Sophie’s best friend dies in a tragic accident, she travels to the isle of Skye in Scotland to visit her relatives, who live there in an old, possibly haunted mansion. The second book got her an agent with Carolyn Whitaker of London Independent Books but, unfortunately, not a publisher. She had no good backstory and it was hard for me to understand her motive and drive with her craziness.

There she met some great people and had a lot of fun messing about during lessons that were clearly meant to be extremely solemn affairs. The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide. All in all, this mysterious novel was a gripping page-turner and it was hard to put down until the mystery was solved.

I loved that the author drew on real stuff for the book, the Frozen Charlotte dolls are real things (which I knew) and the Fair Charlotte ballad, which the author used at the start of each chapter (a very cool inclusion) is actually a real thing. There were a few scenes in the book where I did actually find myself lifting my feet from the floor so that I wouldn’t imagine a freezing cold hand reaching out to my ankle.
