About this deal

Writing is all she’s ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination. For anyone that has read this authors books before, you know that you fall into the storyline hook line and sinker, and that you just keep reading. In a parallel story, with a different timeline, we see where Cleo is now and learn how she reached that place. Narrated by Cleo, over two different timelines of past and present, the pacing is fast and exciting - forever needing to know more information.

Writing is all she's ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination. But now she has decided to walk away from it all – including divorcing her husband, Wallace – before her past secrets catch up with her. It’s been a while since I’ve read a full book in one day but this was literally in my hand for the whole day. I certainly couldn’t predict how the story would eventually play out, anyway, and it constantly took me by surprise, so this was such a great reading experience for me overall. Like the other Dorothy Koomson novels I’ve read ( The Brighton Mermaid and I Know What You’ve Done), My Other Husband is mainly set in Brighton where the author lives.

What I thought was going to be a crime/ thriller, turned out to be a boring story with a few murders briefly mentioned.Although this is a clever, multi layered slow burner there are some jaw to the floor reveals with information bombs that explode your expectations and opinions of certain characters. This is the kind of mystery, though, where you want the main character to contact the police at multiple points, which she does not do, so the plot can plod along. Nevertheless I enjoyed it and will be reading more of her books now, starting with the one I already own. The main character was likeable and her story was heartbreaking, the story was good and really well written, as are all of Dorothy Koomson's books. My Other Husband is like a gigantic puzzle of obsession, control, secret lives, and past crimes, and I absolutely loved how the pieces slowly came together as we moved between past and present to unravel Cleo’s mindblowing past.

It must have been difficult to make the transition from 'chick lit' to thriller but the gorgeous Ms Koomson did it with style! We follow Cleo and Heath, and their friend Trina, through university and beyond and grow to understand Cleo and Heath’s relationship. I use my writing to try to explore what I’m feeling, I try to get into the heads of other people so I can see things from their point of view.Dorothy’s first novel, The Cupid Effect, was published in 2003 (when she was quite a bit older than 13). She is a very different person in the present day and it’s intriguing trying to work out what, how and why her life has imploded. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There is a split timeline so in the present, Cleo is an author – her book, The Baking Detective, is being adapted into a successful TV series and she’s working on the scripts. I wasn't expecting to get so emotionally involved with the characters, and i have to admit that the last chapter (before the epilogue) literally had me in tears.
