About this deal

It has notes of salted caramel, orange, peach and melon, along with savoury plantain and hints of oak. Due to its location, Amrut enjoys an accelerated maturation of its whiskies (3-4 times that of Scotland) however the Angel’s share can be 15% per year. During the 1950s and 1960s, Amrut launched products for the Indian armed forces as well as the general market; products included the dark rum Amrut XXX and Silver Cup Brandy. Amrut presents this product as a humble tribute to the Indian farmer, who has grown this barley with care and affection with which he has tilled the soil. On the nose this spectacular whisky offers up notes of heavy oak, barley sugar and some subtle smoke characters that play ever so well with amazingly complex flavours like custard cream, toffee and dried fruits.

Both unpeated Indian barley and peated Scottish barley are distilled and matured separately in American oak barrels for at least four years before being married together in American oak for a further three months. The water used in the manufacturing process is transported to the distillery by truck from a well, 15 miles (24 km) away, in a pesticide-free agricultural area owned by the company. In Indian mythology, when the gods and rakshasas (demons) churned the ocean using the mountain Meru, a golden pot sprang out containing 'Amrut' – the elixir of life. Amrut can boast an exciting range of peated and un-peated malts, single cask maturations and variety of wood finishes. The manufacturing process involves the use of six 10,000-litre stainless steel fermenters, two unique conical 5,000-litre copper Pot stills with copper condensers and new and used ex- Bourbon barrels.The eight-year maturation in Bangalore resulted in a high evaporative loss of 12% per annum, or a total loss of 274 litres of spirit over eight years, from the two Bourbon casks the distillery had used.

Four years is a long time for aging in India, as the arm weather found there encourages rapid aging.
