About this deal

It’s a decent little entry in their catalogue, but the first major highlight was to come only months later. Interestingly it features two songs which were already on Morbid Tales, at least on the US version included in this package. Despite Apocalyptic Raids being warmly thought of now by fans of extreme metal, it’s kind of stunning to see how quickly and effectively Celtic Frost managed to alter their entire future course in just a few months. But we narrowed it down to three titles and from those titles I personally felt, given what the content of this box set is, Danse Macabre would best represent it. Released last week (we unboxed it in the runup), this best of a box includes Celtic Frost’s first two albums, first two EPs, and a set of rehearsal tracks from back in the day. Arguably despite being a little off the wall in places, Into The Pandemonium still manages to be very accessible, especially for fans of older rock and roll. There’s no denying the Black Sabbath influence (but, hell, what band wasn’t influenced by the Black Country’s favourite sons? We wanted to improve our technical abilities, so we added quite a few Hellhammer songs and a few covers; Angel Witch and things like that to actually have an evening full of rehearsals. Each is not only unique, but part of an entire tapestry that only now can be appreciated for being a remarkable part of music history.

Only CELTIC FROST could create an album which kicks off with a singular cover of a new wave song ( WALL OF VOODOO's "Mexican Radio") and immediately follow it up with the mournful tragedy of "Mesmerized". Visions Of Mortality features a pace change or two in the song, Dethroned Emperor features touches of Sabbath-esque doom and chunky thrash, a very enjoyable song. Intensely heavy, nuanced and experimental, the record was a radical musical statement of intent; a stunning synthesis of Warrior and Ain's disparate influences. Certainly, especially with the non-traditional instruments, you get the feeling from this point that Celtic Frost were a band prepared to push a few boundaries.

Into The Pandemonium" was the last recording made by this era of CELTIC FROST, bringing to an end a period of incredible creative and artistic growth over what was a remarkably brief period of time. And also something that’s coming up which is also special is that Triptykon announced that you’ll perform a tribute set of early Celtic Frost songs at Hell’s Heroes Festival in Houston, Texas next year.Third album Cold Lake took a different direction and although I quite like it, it if oft considered too different and one that the band’s record labels now overlook the existence of. Daring, dark and superlatively heavy, "To Mega Therion" is a sophisticated expression of CELTIC FROST's inherent drive to eschew genre limitations and, instead, define art on their own terms. They were still an active entity when I was in my formative metal years, but just one of the many bands I didn’t pursue. I like the fact that the rehearsals are included, which allows fans to compare and contrast between the actual tracks and go back and forth and listen.

But as we saw with Black Sabbath, new doors can be kicked open with very little in the way of planning, with revolutionary results; perhaps what is more interesting is looking at which artists stride purposefully through these doors that have arguably only been booted open accidentally. Replete with iconic cover art by HR Giger, "To Mega Therion" imposes its dark majesty from the off with the orchestral bombast of "Innocence And Wrath", before launching into the savagery of the hook-laden "The Usurper". So a lot of these cassettes were either taken by friends of ours, or we were giving them to our crew, or we used them at home to work on the lyrics or guitar solely. But, despite these obstacles, the band defended their artistic vision and the result is an astonishing piece of avant-garde art.One of the first bands to follow in the rupturing aftermath of Venom’s first single and two albums, was Swiss metal group Celtic Frost. Opener “Mexican Radio” is a far cry from their earlier material in terms of style, and the first opening track to actually be a song.

Daring, dark and superlatively heavy, “To Mega Therion” is a sophisticated expression of CELTIC FROST‘s inherent drive to eschew genre limitations and, instead, define art on their own terms. Into The Pandemonium” was the last recording made by this era of CELTIC FROST, bringing to an end a period of incredible creative and artistic growth over what was a remarkably brief period of time. The echo on the vocals and the high end treble give the whole thing an abrasive edge, but the music itself is pretty clear. This decade-long process was, among many other things, one of deracination – almost certainly an unconscious move on the part of its main players, as by the early 80s, most young white metal musicians, when they rejected the blues as an influence, were rejecting music made by white musicians, who had in turn been influenced by white musicians, who had originally been influenced by Black musicians. My friend Calum Harvie from the UK made brand new interviews about that particular period of Celtic Frost with me and Reed St. Over the course of little more than three years between 1984 and 1987, CELTIC FROST established themselves as one of the most important bands in extreme and experimental music of that era. While the recording quality is top notch with the bass really thumping, it still has that slightly tinny and “recorded live” feel you often get from early releases.
