About this deal

I’ve owned the 2TB version for a little over a month now, having used it both professionally in my work as a wedding photographer, and for personal use while traveling with my family. Carry less equipment when every ounce counts and offload, edit and stream HD media in the field with My Passport Wireless Pro. On an Android phone you can tap your way through the various nested folders, or drill-down by photos, music or videos. It features a powerful 6,700 mAh battery that can be used to either power up the device (with up to 10 hours of continuous use), or to function as a power bank to provide charging to other devices such as smartphones and tablets. The software is able to read thumbnails from RAW files (using the embedded JPEG thumbnails in RAW files), so you can preview images from both SD cards and the built-in storage.

Note the ARW RAW format of the A7 III was readable even though it’s not yet on WD’s compatibility list. I wasn’t able to try this during my tests with the drive, but will update the review if I get the chance in the future; I also hope it works with the FTP capabilities of Sony’s A9. We’ve partnered with Ontrack to provide protection for routine and extreme data loss scenarios such as drive failure, viruses, and software issues. Just switch it on and connect to its Wifi with multiple devices to collaborate on a project or simply share files. Tapping any photo file or thumbnail retrieves a version to fill the phone’s screen and once in this view you can pinch to zoom-in a little or swipe fairly quickly and responsively between them. You should think carefully about your intended workflow though: if you intend to browse the contents of your backup in the field, you’ll much prefer doing so with a tablet than a phone, and if you end up needing your laptop after all, you could save money and space by using a simple external drive instead – see my WD My Passport Ultra review. At the end of the day, whether I’m staying in the back of my truck, or a hotel, US or otherwise, a laptop and mobile SSD drives are the most efficient backup solution for me. Again it can be configured to present itself as a DLNA media server, allowing any compatible player to access the content.

I was interested in purchasing one of these drives to use for back-up on a forthcoming trip, the main benefit being that it has a buiilt-in SD card reader and can make back-ups without being connected to a computer. Finally, the drive has it’s own inbuilt battery which gives it up to 10 hours of power for backing up the cards or connecting to a tablet or phone. The solid state drive (SSD) of the My Passport Wireless SSD makes everything much quicker, and is also much less fragile – the rubber jacket helps too. Once the SD card backup starts, you will be able to monitor the copy process by checking out the progress bar in the WD My Cloud app. Using an integrated 6,400 mAh power bank, you get the perfect travel partner to keep your devices running. Will have to find out how I will do incremental backup – likely just manual selection based upon date. This essentially means that if you use other type of media such as XQD, CFast or SD UHS-II, you will be stuck with unbelievably slow transfer rates! If you connect wirelessly, whether directly or via an access point, multiple devices can access the device simultaneously and there’s no need for cables; connecting via a shared access point also means your device still enjoys internet connectivity (assuming the access point also does), but data transfer to and from the drive will be slower than a direct connection.

While it’s copying, the 4 blue LEDs on the front flash in sequence, and then when it’s done you just pull the card out. When he’s not taking photos or reviewing the latest camera gear and software, Mark can be found cycling around the northern rivers. Since I often end up taking a power bank with me when traveling, I can now skip it and bring this gadget instead.I guess looks are somewhat subjective, but I found the My Passport Wireless SSD was trying to be like the iconic LaCie Rugged with its rubberized orange jacket, but getting it slightly wrong…!

Once the backup is done, all four lights should be lit up and the Wireless SSD light should stop blinking. Since the My Passport contains a high performance SDD, you can connect it directly via USB to your computer to function as a fast external hard drive. There’s LaCie’s DJI Copilot hard drive, not to mention Kickstarter projects like the Gnarbox, currently gearing-up to launch its version 2 model by the end of 2018. Again the backup process began as soon as I inserted the card, and this time completed 15 minutes and 23 seconds later.I thought it would be a good idea to give it a shot, but this turned out to be a pretty bad idea at the end. If you’re like me and hate trying to import movies into iTunes, then onto to your iPad, using the My Passport Wireless SSD is a massive breath of fresh air!
