About this deal

Millions rely on Vox’s clear, high-quality journalism to understand the forces shaping today’s world. There’s a rising romantic tension between her and Malcolm Polstead, who was the child protagonist of La Belle Sauvage and is now a professor at Jordan College, the men’s college where Lyra grew up. Her rescuer was the heroic but thoroughly human Malcolm, an 11-year-old living with his parents in a pub on the river outside Oxford.

Marcel Delamare, Lyra's uncle and an ambitious Magisterium cardinal, learns that rose oil allows people to see Dust. This declaration sounds permissive (you can believe whatever you like) but is in fact stern (you should listen harder to the logic of your instinctual beliefs).

In 2003, His Dark Materials came third in the BBC’s ‘Big Read’ competition to find the nation’s favourite book, and in 2005 he was awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the world’s biggest prize for children’s literature. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. He witnesses the hijacking of a meeting of rose farmers and helps to diffuse the situation by killing their leader. There is also some depiction of Lyra’s awakened sexuality, though Pullman makes her seek out the company of men to whom she is not attracted, so that she cannot be unfaithful to the absent Will, forever lost to his parallel world. Malcolm poses as a journalist in Geneva, and interviews Simon Talbot, the author behind one of the books Lyra and Pan had been disputing over.It was quite invisible to everyday vision … it was seen by the imagination, whatever that was, and not by logic. He is best known for the His Dark Materials trilogy (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass), which has been named one of the top 100 novels of all time by Newsweek. Malcolm learns that the "men from the mountains" are funded by pharmaceutical companies intent on controlling the supply of rose oil.
