About this deal

These scenes made me feel really angry for Lily, and I wanted her to be able to get away from her family. Grapes draw our "bad fruits" list to a close because they're often vilified for their sugar content, but grapes are not an enemy. As a parallel to exploring her own roots, Lily’s love of the origin of language is woven throughout by giving us lovely descriptions like this: 'The Latin root for ‘hallucinate’ is irresistibly beautiful, alucinari, something you would name a Victorian child. After high praise from a trusted UK friend, I quickly attempted to source this and was able to find it at the Book Depository.

Throughout the story Lily suffers from hallucinations but the hallucinations are actually flashbacks to her mothers abusive childhood and they are causing Lily to suffer panic attacks. Bad Fruit occupies that liminal space between psychological thriller and horror, beautifully written and incredibly disturbing.Ms King has written a book that combines depression, family violence with Lily's brother and sister keeping well away from their parents. There are some heart-wrenching, awkward and downright weird moments between Lily and her mother that mean you are obsessed with knowing what will happen next.

Bad Fruit occupies that liminal space between psychological thriller and horror, beautifully written and incredibly disturbing. It was important to me the author is Asian because I'm TIREDT of white people only including Asian women to be petite, trophy wives to fat, rich white guys. I didn't enjoy this tale of a mother/daughter toxic relationship as much as I'd hoped to, perhaps because I stupidly read it back to back with another book that involved parental abuse, it was a bit of a trauma overload. The first person narration means that you're never quite sure what her siblings might be hiding from her, or whether her picture and judgement of them is clouded, and the same goes for her parents, particularly her father. Beautiful and shocking, Bad Fruit is as compulsive as it is thought-provoking, as nuanced as it is explosive. She lives with her parents in Greenwich, South-East London and has two older siblings: a sister, Julia and a brother, Jacob. Known as the "king of fruits" and cultivated and enjoyed worldwide, mangoes are rich in vitamins A and C, potassium, folate and fiber.

This unforgettable debut follows 17-year-old Lily and her complex relationship with her troubled mother. Bad Fruit cuts away the skin of a family as if a daughter could be a knife slicing through lies, pain, and fear. It was snapped up by HarperFiction in a five-way auction – you can read more about it in the Bookseller here.So please trust me when I say that you need to give this book a try if you're a fan of thrillers you won't regret it!

Her mother exerts an unhealthy amount of control over Lily, even forcing her to wear make-up and dye her hair black to look more like her, more Chinese: 'Despite everything Mama has done to bring out the Chinese in me, I remain resolutely myself, her whitest child. Studies in this review report these bioactive components give bananas an advantage against multiple types of cancers and may show potential for cancer prevention and therapy. A masterful exploration of mothers and daughters, inherited trauma and the race to break its devastating cycle, BAD FRUIT will leave readers breathlessly questioning their own notions of femininity, race and redemption.

I devoured this Reader review A powerful, hard-hitting and exquisitely written novel CLARE MACKINTOSHParing-knife sharp . She has a passion for encouraging others to eat well in simple, practical ways that are realistic for the whole family. Full disclosure, first person narratives are not my favourite, especially when there's trauma involved, it can be exhausting, so I think this is definitely a case of "it's not you, it's me" as most reviews are 4 and 5 star.
