Nothing else on “Revolver” sounds anything like it, but then the album’s striking feature is that each of its songs is a distinct entity.

Much of Revolver’s music and lyrics reflect the band’s experiments with mind-expanding drugs – She Said She Said was inspired by a pre-fame Peter Fonda interrupting a Lennon acid trip. In that sense, looking at the relatively threadbare musical arrangements, this is still a transitional album. Pepper, The White Album, and Abbey Road because at this point in their evolution there were fewer instruments to mix. The vinyl version of the new stereo mix rocks plenty hard when I turn up the volume on my amplifier. K. albums chart, and a double A-side single with "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yellow Submarine" topped the U.Working anxiously late into the night for a week, he filled a sheet of A2 graphic paper with magic-marker sketches — the Beatles in a hot-air balloon, the Beatles in a boat — but correctly predicted that the band would choose the image inspired by their lengthening hair: an illustration of four heads in the style of the Victorian artist Aubrey Beardsley. This is The Beatles off the edge of the map, showing the rest of the world that there were plenty of untouched new vistas begging for exploration. I’ve always thought the electric rhythm guitar in the song was a little too gruff, a little too gritty, a little too sandpapery for such a gentle, stately song. But this new mix softens the guitar considerably – somehow, Giles has sanded off the rough edges, also bringing the bass up in the mix. However, those of us who were totally knocked out by the precise detailing of The Beatles In Mono box (with its reproduction of the very different folded-over tab-type construction of the original UK Beatles records) might have to reset one’s expectations a bit, as these are more standard, modern constructs.

Someone once said there was never a greater contrast on a Beatles album than that of the bummed out bad acid trip of “She Said She Said” followed by the bright sing-song shiny enthusiasm of “Good Day Sunshine”, and I think they are right. Even as the contrasting personalities of John, Paul, George and Ringo came to the fore, they still delighted in each other’s company. I’ve never been a huge fan of “I’m Only Sleeping” – its kind of soporific, and I suppose that’s the point, but the “Keeping an eye on the world going by my window” hook is really the only thing it has going for it.If you do have that vaunted vinyl edition, or perhaps are one of the lucky ones to have an original UK mono pressing, then this inclusion may be extraneous for you.
