There’s not a lot to be said about image and video quality that hasn’t already been revealed in our Sony A7S III review. The ZV-E1 shares the same 12MP full-frame sensor, which delivers clean-looking stills with impressively wide dynamic range, even in low light. In 2023, it’s a modest resolution, but if you don’t print or view big it’s plenty enough – and the quality of those pixels is outstanding. In addition to six customizable buttons, frequently used controls are within easy one-handed reach, leaving your other hand free for lens operation or balance. And usability is enhanced by multiple screw holes on the body and handle, allowing accessories to be attached directly. Cinema cameras are utterly different in features, handling, jargon, connections… and price. The FX3, however, bridges that gap rather nicely. It blends the familiarity of a mirrorless camera body with some of the key features of cinema cameras in a way we haven’t really seen before from Sony. Cameras designed for vlogging should be easy to carry and operate, and the ZV-E1 hits the mark. It’s Sony’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera with in-body image stabilization, with a similar form factor to the Sony A7C, which includes a decent grip and a plastic but durable body. There’s also the dumbed-down button layout of other Sony ZV cameras, which includes a defocus button and photo/ video/ S&Q mode switch. This will be a matter of personal preference, but while the A7S III is designed as a hybrid camera for both stills and video, the FX3 takes the same basic shape but adapts it heavily for video, including accessory mounting points and a carry handle with XLR mic input. The FX6 follows a classic box-style cinema camera design. 10. Size and weight The zoom lever located on the top of the grip not only controls compatible powered zoom lenses but also allows Clear Image Zoom to be also used with unpowered zoom and prime lenses with less image degradation – reducing the number of lenses required for many projects. This lever also enables smooth zooming that is difficult for manual zoom-ring control. With the addition of the new FX3, the most compact camera in the series, Sony offers a true line up of versatile creative tools for all types of visual storytellers. The FX3 also has the same 13-hour maximum continuous recording time as the A7S III. All of which means that card capacities and battery life are likely to be more of a limiting factor than overheating. 5. With a compact design for solo shooters, travel applications, and to serve as an ideal B cam, the Sony FX3 borrows from both the Cinema Line and Alpha series of cameras to create an optimized portable cinema camera. The FX3 features all of the imaging attributes you’d expect from this class but sports a newly designed body that’s hand-holdable, with a streamlined and minimal profile, and has a “cage-free” design, indicating the ability to secure various accessories directly to the camera body. The various AF methods can be selected according to the shooting environment and the position of the subject: 5-point, 3-point high-speed, 1-point high-speed, 1-point normal-speed and spot. The inclusion of an AF assist lamp provides further assistance in low light situations when focusing is difficult. The results: stress free photography with never a moment missed.
