About this deal

We do take seriously the fact that some people may not wish to drink alcoholic drinks or beverages high in sugar content,so we have assembled an interesting selection of (mainly) sparkling mineral waters from around Europe. Professor Donnelly has spent her career working on statistics around infectious diseases from Ebola to bovine TB from Lassa fever to MERS One of my favourite video clips is one I have of my son, aged two, tasting fizzy water for the first time. In the space of a few seconds, his expression goes from curiosity, to alarm, to pure terror. And then just as he’s about to start bawling, his tear-filled eyes widen with delight. He bursts out laughing, extends the cup to the camera and bellows: “MORE!” Châteldon is known for its naturally carbonated mineral water. It was the first mineral water exploited in France and transported by bottles to the Court of Louis XIV in Versailles. This water is used for its diuretic and digestive properties. It is also rich in potassium, sodium and fluorine. In France, one finds the water of Châteldon in the large hotels and restaurants, and in delicatessens. In 1650, the first doctor of the king, Guy-Crescent Fagon, praised the virtues of Châteldon to Louis XIV.

She adds, ‘And who could have predicted there would have been a vaccine less than a year after SARS-CoV-2 was identified? It was astounding. We are extremely fortunate to live in a country which is able to offer the vaccine to everyone who wants it. Not everyone has that option.’ Châteldon is a town where develops an economic activity (markets, fairs), from the thirteenth century. It is located at the foot of the castle of the stronghold of Castrum Odonis of the Count of Auvergne Guy II. Taken by force, around the year 1200, by Archimbaud on behalf of Lord Bourbon Guy de Dampierre, we can see a story of the fight between Philip Augustus, King of France allied with the Bourbons, and the King of England supported by the Counts of Auvergne. My mother told us we could do anything. She made things happen,’ says Professor Donnelly, who still describes her mother as unstoppable.I decided, though, that I didn’t want all the numbers I worked with to have a dollar sign in front of them,’ she laughs. ‘And I didn’t want to go into clinical trials, which was the other obvious path.’ The springs are located at the foot of a Dolomitemountain wall which favours the formation and replenishment of a mineral water basin. The water then seeps to depths of over 700m (2,300ft.) and flows underground to a distant aquifer. Wie alle zukünftigen Editionen der Edition Austria handelt es sich auch bei dieser um ein vom Künstler individuell bearbeitetes Unikat.

They were both completely new pathogens,’ she says. ‘In each case, we made the best of the data we had, but there were inevitable uncertainties. As you extrapolate, there are more uncertainties....’Castle Châteldon wis ance awned bi Prime Meenister Pierre Laval. It remains the prime landmark o the veelage.

It’s often best left to other people [who like appearing on the television]...I only do them, if I feel it would really help people understand something.’ Ever the slightly scary statistician, she says, ‘It’s hard to believe there won’t be a few surprises out there. You can’t know what future variants will look like.’Imagine if the death rate had been that of SARS...Professor Donnelly blanches at the thought, ‘It’s extremely difficult to control transmission if the transmitter doesn’t yet have symptoms.’ But her move to Oxford was ‘transformative’, ‘life changing’. She says, ‘I found what I really wanted to do....there was problem solving, getting an answer, and it is worthwhile. It had impact – often immediately so.’

They were both completely new pathogens...In each case we made the best of the data we had, but there were inevitable uncertainties. As you extrapolate, there are more uncertainties There’s a lot of unpleasantness out there. It can be very upsetting,’ she says. And she does not seek out media opportunities either – avoiding becoming a household name, despite being a key researcher in the statistical analysis and modelling of the pandemic. The village lies on the western edge of the Montagne Bourbonnaise and the northern edge of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, the largest nature park in Europe. To the west lies the Limagne, where the Allier and Dore rivers converge. Nineteen kilometres to the north is the City of Vichy. I was the sort of child who did logic puzzles for fun. I did lots of them, books and books...I gave my own children those same books...they were not interested

It worked out quite well – very well, actually. Both Professor Donnelly and one of her brothers are university academics. Her other brother became an IT specialist. The water is rich in minerals from the heart of the earth, which coincidentally have been shown to lower cholesterol, thus benefitting the heart. It also has many other health properties. There’s a very clear gender gradient – in pure Maths, there are more men. More women use Maths to do something applied. I wanted to make a difference… to do something useful Had this new virus been as serious as the original SARS virus, on which she also worked, some 14% of people who contracted it would have died. As it is, the mortality rate from COVID – which led to many tragic deaths - has been about 1% internationally.
