About this deal

There’s much sadness and injustice, yet great moments of beauty, connection and balm for the soul as well. I imagined a very emotional journey but I had no idea just how emotional it would be and I underestimated greatly how I would feel.

Schooled in Biblical morality, Lily supposes that it won’t be long before she ends her days with a noose around her neck. I’ll be looking up Stacey Halls’s novel The Foundling to see what inspiration she takes from it, and checking out the current exhibition at the Museum which follows a Foundling child’s journey from abandonment to fighting in the battle of Trafalgar. Of course, her suffering and her guilt would be with her forever, but this would feel more in keeping with the character that Tremain has built up.Perhaps these characters aren’t fleshed out quite well enough for me to understand their significance and motives. Other than this it is a great read and recommended unless you are already feeling a bit down in the dumps! Not everyone who works in such places, however, is as good-hearted as their founders, and harsh punishment and cruelty, then as now, were not uncommon. Lily had a happy time with her foster parents, Perkin and Nelly Buck, who ran Rookey Farm in Suffolk, and their three sons, and the idyllic rural life is described.

When Sam meets Lily again, there is an instant attraction between them and Lily is convinced that Sam holds the key to her happiness – but might he also be the one to uncover her crime and so condemn her to death? Tremain turns it into something quite different: a suspenseful tale of love, cruelty, revenge and justice. We meet the fascinating cast of characters who shape Lily's life, the policeman Sam Trench, the evil hospital nurse, and Belle Prettywood - the colourful businesswoman who becomes Lily's employer and friend. no one can break your heart quite like this' Neel MukherjeeReaders love LILY'A stunning story of love, betrayal and true grit' Susan H.On a freezing winter's night, a baby is abandoned at the gates of a park only to be saved by a young policeman and taken to the Foundling Hospital.
