both to do that for the sake of the family and we could see how important is the role of a mother and wife during wartime even though they fought in different ways.

You can see that Sofie lived in an impossible situation and Lizzie can be as self righteous as she likes not having been there, she was prejudiced to people with no idea what they went through. The promise of a post-war angle featuring former members of the Nazi party as well as a scientist focus had me instantly intrigued, and I’m happy to announce that this story definitely delivered for me.Inspired by true events, this is a heart-stopping, unforgettable story of ordinary people fighting for survival in the darkest of times. That’s right: not only do we follow Sofie in the past and present, but we also have a second POV featuring Lizzie. Unless explicitly stated that they are free, all books that I review have been purchased by me or borrowed from the library. After World War II, the United States brings over German scientists, pardoning them for their war crimes in exchange for their help with the space program. Dual timelines don’t always work for me; I tend to much prefer one over the other and that can make it harder to stay invested.

It is essentially just the life stories of two different women; there is no conflict, no action, no problem to be solved. Facts combined with complex characters and a part of history we cannot forget are brought together brilliantly and will leave you questioning what you would do during this time period. It was so well written that the plot drew me in right from the beginning and held my attention until the very satisfying and well done ending.

i appreciated that history… it seemed so fast but it was YEARS of subtle changes and slowly coming to power that ultimately when people realized what the Nazi’s were doing, it was really difficult to stop it. While initially I felt like Lizzie’s POV distracted from Sofie’s situation and the escalating Nazi situation in Germany in the years before WWII, you soon realize why her POV is important in the present (1950) timeline. I was even shocked when reminded of how Hitler was so proud of his race that German women were encouraged if not pressured to bear as many children as possible.

The German wife is set in two timelines- one in the 80s/90s and one in the 40s, throughout and just after WW2. Especially with the main character Sofie having a Jewish best friend on one hand, but also increasingly Nazi-focused other friends as well as the obligation to follow the new rules or face grave consequences for their family. My one tiny critique is that I felt the ending wrapped up a little too quick and neat, but nothing that took away from my immense enjoyment of the overall story. I also liked the way Rimmer slowly peeled back the layers of the German wife and that of her family. Her brother, Henry has seen first-hand what the Nazis did, resulting in mental distress termed combat fatigue.

The German Wife was about love, family, choosing, recognizing good and evil, right and wrong and having faith in others. In Florida where I live, the governor has just signed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which will allow parents to sue teachers who talk about their personal life.We focus on two main female characters, the men and children in their lives, and their acquaintances. These two families end up neighbors in Huntsville, Alabama where the Rhodes have been settled thanks to the US Operation Paperclip whereby the US arranged to get the best of German scientists out of Germany, regardless of their affiliation with the Nazis and put them to work in the US space program.
