About this deal

That's because it was following in the footsteps of its predecessor, a multi-award-winning phone, simply because it packed all the power of the 'normal' Galaxy S6 and yet. Most of Samsung’s modifications are good: more quick settings, more power-saving modes, extensive control over notifications including the power of the vibration.

unlocked) looks so much like the Galaxy S6 that you'd be excused for thinking it's not a major upgrade. Spending some time with the S7 watching music, movie, gaming, and, yes, adult content, I found that it didn't overheat (unlike in Will's experience, so that's a plus), but also that I've become spoiled by more powerful PC-based VR experiences like on the HTC Vive. It doesn't really help or harm the device; it's just one of those "because we can" features that Android OEMs are always so fond of. Now that this handset has been discontinued (owing to all the catching fire it did) it's good to see that the features live on - users are starting to get the new software which brings more options to the always-on display. The 5 MP front-facing snapper, on the other hand, is nothing out of the ordinary – there are better selfie phones on the market. To make the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge water and dust resistant, satisfying IP68 specifications, an exclusive type of water protective tape has been added to the back of the front and rear glass of the phone’s casing. This is a style that still feels a lot better than anything from Samsung's plastic days, but it does contain twice as much fragile glass as a normal smartphone.

My colleague Will Greenwald really liked the Gear VR when he reviewed it with the Galaxy S6, and I spent some time with VR porn in a Gear VR at CES earlier this year. The Samsung Galaxy S7 doesn’t break the mould but it is a significant upgrade on the Samsung Galaxy S6, with more power, a likely better camera, a new screen feature, a bigger battery, a refined design and the addition of a microSD card slot and waterproof body. It’s also not particularly useful for anything other than just looking at the date, as it doesn’t pull in any events from Samsung’s S Planner app, which is in turn linked to your Google Calendar, or highlight upcoming appointments. The camera also has optical image stabilisation and can shoot video in 2160p at 30fps, so it’s well-equipped. The latter part works: There's none of the pulsing you see on the S6 as the camera struggles to find focus.Changing the S7 to a Type-C plug would have required Samsung to make a new Gear VR, and we'd guess the company wasn't ready to do that. Samsung is offering free repairs/replacements for users in Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg (limited to those) under warranty given that the screen is not externally damaged. That’s exactly the same screen as the Samsung Galaxy S6 but that’s absolutely fine, as that’s already one of the best displays around. It might lack the new-gen hardware of 2018 flagships and may have been usurped at the top of the best Android phone pile by the likes of the Pixel 3 and Huawei P20 Pro but it’s a strong performer that can be had for less than most – and with a perfect 5/5 Trusted Reviews rating, it should still absolutely be considered.
