About this deal

Like a romantic person that he is, he falls for it and trusts her, which is bringing him only disappointment because she has left him every time when she promised him otherwise.

After his father's death, Felix comes to stay with his uncle, Costache, who turnes out to be a miser, and with Costache's step-daughter, Otilia with whom Felix eventually falls in love with. I see Felix more of an introvert; he puts up with everyone's opinion, but does never say what he is thinking of, except to Otilia. Costache not to make any formal adoption procedure and leaves with Pascalopol at his house, leaving Felix surprised and disappointed. Wicked Step Mother: Aglae is Costache's sister, but she plays this role toward Otilia, whom she sees as an intruder and a threat to her children's inheritance.Even more noteworthy is his habit of occasionally rocking back and forth, something which is inexplicably encouraged by his mother. One of the many sub-plots concerns her relationship with Pascalopol, her father’s friend and a man of around fifty but also very rich. To her horror he marries a woman of dubious morals and virtue though it seems that they were only cohabiting and not properly married and the relationship is broken off. She places Felix above her and that is why she chooses to leave him, to give him the opportunity to become someone important, although, like a fool that she is, she does not have the ability to perceive him as a person that can love her enough and bring her presents. The action centers around Felix Sima, a student at the University of Medicine who comes to Bucharest to live under the guardianship of his uncle, Costache Giurgiuveanu.

It's a high end, ultracentral street in Paris, very close to the Opera, meaning that she is most likely enjoying luxurious accommodations. Felix, with the beginning of the First World War, becomes a doctor, afterward a university teacher, and has a successful marriage entering the high society. All for Nothing: Costache's obsession with frugality, getting as much money as possible and his pathological need to have his money close to him ultimately comes to naught: it doesn't help his health and he dies after being robbed by Stănică Raţiu, leaving his adopted daughter in a vulnerable position, leading to her decision to marry a man she doesn't love.Stănică is a complete jerkass who gives the reader a new reason to hate him with every scene he appears in, but it seems like he truly loves his family when he goes to visit his aging aunt for her birthday. Asked by Aglae, Felix tutors Titi, that left on the second year, Aurica (Titi’s sister) getting a likeness for him. I find Otilia really clever, but the stereotype that the woman must not be an erudite is planted so deeply in her mind that it makes her look stupid and foolish for most of the time. Felix once accidentally met Pascalopol in a train (post war period), finding out he divorced Otilia, which is now married to a rich man in Buenos Aires.

Romanul devine o satira vehementa la adresa burgheziei in care relatiile copii-parinti s-au degradat datorita banului. A large family and it's many generations vie for advantage, seeking to win the inheritance sure to be left behind by a wealthy older man of the clan. Costache suffers a heart attack, after which the whole Tulea family spends 2 days in the old man’s house completely ignoring him and his illness. She loves them very much, but she refuses to see their glaring inadequacies, and enables their self-destructive behavior. The novel is a long one – over six hundred pages – and Călinescu tells a full and detailed story of the machinations of the various families, with virtually every family member having serious flaws.

Jerkass Woobie: Aurica lives with a smothering, authoritarian mother who drilled into her the idea that her only purpose in life is to marry. May–December Romance: Near the end of the book, Otilia marries Pascalopol, a rich landlord who is significantly older than her, and they move to Paris. Pascalopol knows Otilia since she was a child, is old enough to be her father and admits to Felix that he is uncertain what is paternal and what is sexual in his affection for her. Awful Wedded Life: Olimpia constantly rejects Stănică's conjugal advances and refuses to have another child with him, which rapidly diminishes his affection for her. He will try later with Georgeta, a woman with whom Felix has a brief fling while Otilia is in Paris.

The novel is highly descriptive, with lengthy and at times convoluted sentences, and there is a preference for neologisms like “ fata juvenila” (juvenile face), “ aspect bizar” (bizarre aspect), and “ barbat chic” (chic man), which accounts for the modernity of the novel. Costache has plans with Felix and Otilia, starting to gather construction materials for a house where the who will live after his death. When Costache balks at the thought of spending money, Pascalopol offers his own lawyer and assures him that he will take care of everything. At the beginning of August, Olimpia, the eldest child of Aglae, makes her appearance in the house together with Stanica, her paramour with which she has a child.Aglae seems interested in the future of the host’s daughter, in hope she will marry her with Titi, while Felix seems more and more ashamed of Georgeta’s behavior.
