Casanova is Hannon at his best, showing his range, his talent, and his inventive mind as he takes in the world around him. Performing as an eleven-piece ensemble, the band will play two albums from their catalogue in full each night. The album's sixth track, "Songs of Love", made its debut on the popular Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted, [5] officially remaining the show's theme song, as heard in its opening titles and end credits.

I may be ready to leave Father Ted behind in the vault of nostalgia in my mind, but Casanova I will keep coming back to – and not just for “Songs of Love”. It was certified Gold in the UK in July 1997, aided by the release of the album's first single, " Something for the Weekend", which reached No. The rest of the album is not at all like that, and has definite echoes of Bonzo Dog Doodah Band wackiness about it.

It was released in 1996 by Setanta Records, and it happened to be the band's commercial breakthrough. Its central theme is sex, around which all songs on the album centre, except "The Dogs and the Horses", which is the last song on the album and whose theme is death. It's probably in some ways DC's crudest album, but it's also crackling with brilliant lyricism and wit, and full of tracks that will stick in your head for days. Seen here in a more stripped down version and with a beautiful set of harmonic vocals playing blissfully over the harpsichord melody it's certainly one of the highlights of the album.

The remastering work, on my copy, really does make such a huge difference in the definition of the sound, when compared to the OG pressing. Phrases like “Pale, pubescent beasts” are golden, but one line sticks out in particular: “Fortune depends on the tone of your voice. Thanks to orchestral arranger Joby Talbot, Hannon sounds truly like a timeless icon here, and that that icon is Scott Walker makes the album all the more enjoyable. There will be others who can relate to that, but it’s by no means a requirement for enjoying Casanova.Casanova is the fourth studio album and features the singles: Something For The Weekend, The Frog Princess and Becoming More Like Alfie, plus Songs Of Love (the theme from Father Ted). A couple of months ago, I became aware of The Divine Comedy and the amazing Neil Hannon for the first time (I know . The gloomy neo-swing jaunt of “A Woman of the World” (which is a reworked rejected first iteration of the Father Ted theme) casually ambles into cavernous depths as the Hannon explores the origin of feelings of love and hate (“Maybe I love her ’cause I’m jealous of her…Maybe I hate her ’cause I didn’t create her). I listen and content myself knowing that someone out there is still carrying the mantle of Walker’s style.
