I am positive that those engaged in extreme sports like surfing, kayaking or skydiving will find a remote control a necessity for shooting videos. The third port lets you dock the entire remote on (via the charging/mount clip featured on the smart remote and Suptig remote). The Remote, compatible with the GoPro HERO10 Black, HERO9 Black, HERO8 Black, and MAX 360 cameras, has a robust and waterproof design, so it can accompany you on all your adventures. When the remote shows two arrows moving towards each other, you can let go of the remote's [Settings/Tag] button.

As usual with wireless remotes, I’ve found that there is a slight lag between pressing the shutter and the camera responding. Recording times will vary with HERO11 Black, HERO11 Black Mini, HERO10 Black, camera settings and environmental conditions. That’s important because unlike most other GoPro models, the HERO9 Black won’t work with the Smart Remote, and the initial launch version of the camera’s firmware didn’t include the ability to add a remote connection beyond the GoPro mobile app. Compared to the official accessory, it suffers from lower battery life and a maximum range that’s around 30ft (10m) shorter. The remote may ask you to pair another, press the [Mode Button] to highlight [No], then press the [Shutter Button] to select it. When you see Pair New on The Remote’s status screen, press The Remote’s shutter button to start the pairing. If you use the official GoPro Smart Remote or the Suptig remote control, you might want to consider getting this triple charger. The GoPro Smart Remote enables control of up to 50 cameras at a time, and features 40% increased battery capacity compared to the older GoPro Wi-Fi Remote.

If your GoPro features voice control (most of the newer ones do), you can control it remotely by saying one of the voice commands. If you do not see the option to add a remote on your HERO9 Black’s menu system, make sure to update the camera’s firmware to at least v1. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The remote should now display the camera's capture settings and recording mode, indicating that pairing was successful. Perhaps the best upgrade over the original smart remote comes in the form of increased battery life, thanks to the newly implemented Bluetooth® Low Energy.

It’s also manufactured with GoPro’s high standards, meaning it really is waterproof up to 33ft (10m) and operational at a 600ft (180m) range in optimal conditions.

But, just like other wireless remotes, it won’t work underwater, which is a limitation on wireless signals through water, not the remote itself. Now we have to get the remote into pairing mode while the camera is still in pairing mode so they can find each other. Besides GoPro’s own offerings, I’ve also had the chance to check out and test several unofficial remotes that are popular on the market. Once you’re in the shooting mode you want, you can use the presets button to cycle through the available presets. I haven’t tested this myself but the smart remote allows you to simultaneously control up to 50 GoPros!
