About this deal

So Andrea Mara had a lot to live up to and I’m pleased to say she absolutely did-Hide and Seek is bloody brilliant!

To begin with, I did think there were a lot of characters in this book, but once I had figured out who was who, I allowed myself to be able to come fully absorbed into the book. Hence why despite recieving my advanced reading copy at 9am after an 11 hour night shift, I sat in bed and got through about 50% of the book in one sitting. Not to mention excelling in creating an attention-grabbing hook to ensure that the reader's attention is 'hooked' from the opening page.I would like to thank Netgalley and Random House UK, Transworld Publishers for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review. In 2018, Joanna loses her daughter in a game of hide and seek in the garden of her new suburban home. It is one of those books that as a reader at times you find yourself holding your breath, at other times you think you might have solved the mystery of what happened to Lily, only to have it thrown into doubt.

Joanna is determined to get to the bottom of the little girl's disappearance but as she begins to snoop, it becomes apparent that she has some pretty dark secrets of her own. You jog along going with the flow then the author chucks in some absolute bombs of information that you feel as if you’re hanging on the edge of a cliff. Her sense of contentment at finding their "forever home" soon subsides when a new neighbour tells her that her home once belonged to the family of Lily Murphy, a three-year-old who went missing in the mid-80s while playing a game of Hide and Seek.

It is so cleverly plotted with many characters whose lives overlap, though its written so well its easy to keep up. Just what happened to Lily on that fateful day so many years ago when a game of Hide and Seek went wrong and so many years later the exact truth behind a little girls disappearance still remains unsolved. Mara is one of the undisputed champions of twisty, gripping thrillers that will leave your heart racing and your nerves shot!Who could given it was so twisty and brilliant but I was ever so slightly on the right track but as to the finer details I was way off track and delighted this was the case. Hide And Seek is a book that surprised me, I thought I knew where this was going after the first couple of chapters but boy I was wrong. This blog hosts a selection of articles written from 2013 to the present, mostly focusing on my book reviews, which are uploaded frequently. Even though there is a smattering of males, the perspectives are all from female points-of-view, which makes sense in the context of traditional roles in the communities being portrayed.

It might be this history, it might be because she has a three year old daughter, or maybe because her husband grew up nearby but Joanna becomes obsessed with discovering what happened to little Lily. Set in a Dublin suburb using two different timeliness, the story of missing child Lily Murphy unfolds. The amount of characters makes it difficult to do them all justice, and some ring truer than others.

Some you will see in yourself, others are that annoying neighbour a few doors over that never smiles, remember that family down the road that seem to have it all or even that cluster of snotty Mummies at the school gates. Many thanks to Netgalley and Random House UK, Transworld Publishers for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly. I never saw the ending coming and her ability to make me as a parent think about what it would be like to lose my child was truly terrifying. How this could be is somewhat clumsily explained over the running of the book, but is the only plot point that stretches the patience of the imagination, in a story with an excellent reveal, as has become Mara’s signature. I suspected everyone at one point or another, but could not have predicted the culprit or the situation around Lily's disappearance.
