Everything in Lonesome Dove is there for a reason and helps to make this one of the best Westerns ever. Jake becomes increasingly alarmed by the brothers' actions as they travel north into Kansas; the gang progresses from robbery to cold-blooded murder, but Jake is too frightened and outnumbered to either kill them or escape.

The pacing is deliberate, allowing for moments of introspection and introspective character development, balanced with tense action and dramatic plot twists. The only man in the outfit who didn't fart frequently was old Bolivar himself -- he never touched beans and lived mainly on sourdough biscuits and chickory coffee, or rather cups of brown sugar with little puddles of coffee floating on top.My Pulitzer read this year was Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner, the 1972 winner, but a timeless book, well worth the time it took to read it. Jake Spoon, another former Ranger, arrives in Lonesome Dove after an absence of more than 10 years, during which he has traveled widely across the United States. I’m thinking about doing a version of Throwback Thursday where I review an older book every month or so.

We also see that Elmira’s obsession with the “unlucky” Dee Boot leads her and Big Zwey to being scalped. As was his custom, Augustus drank a fair amount of whiskey as he sat and watched the sun ease out of the day.To be fair, McMurtry does have Gus take a few stabs at articulating why the Native Americans aren’t always hospitable.
