Like many of these books, the textbook Latin Via Ovid focuses on using real Latin authors to build and cement your knowledge of Latin. Fabulae Faciles was written to provide learners with a stepping stone to Caesar’s De Bello Gallico, which has traditionally been the first Roman text students read. Fabulae Gallicae is, therefore, a welcome breath of fresh air, as it provides something completely different to read. The new UK/International 5th edition is currently underway, with Books I and II due to be published in 2022. By all means break them for fun, but they are completely inviolable and it’s extremely enjoyable and useful to learn them.
Reading (or listening) to this book over and over again will give you a vast vocabulary and a good grasp of more advanced grammar. Translation exercises are useful, but they will be of little use without ample reading of level-appropriate Latin. As a reader, Ad Alpes focuses on building and cementing your knowledge of the Latin language through extensive reading practice.
