About this deal

If you have had the pleasure of tasting this whisky before then you’ll already know how fantastic it truly is. In the event of any safety concerns or for any other information about a product please carefully read any instructions provided on the label or packaging and contact the manufacturer. Finally, a half decade later, I got around to tasting a sample of that GlenDronach 18 and I now know what David was talking about. Flavours of stewed fruits and all-spice marry together with classic aged oloroso sherry and toasted walnut bread combined with chocolate orange.

Fittings include a copper mash tun, Oregon pine washbacks, four steam-heated copper spirit stills and defunct floor maltings. Only bad thing I could say is that every other scotch is always going to be compared to this one and won’t ever be as good. Something about sherry finished scotch is like glue to the inside of the mouth, especially combined with a slightly high 46% ABV. The GlenDronach distillery, established in 1826, is located in the Forgue valley, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire and is named after the source its water; the Dronac burn. This is a 5 bottle that stands out, one that I would drink 9/10 times when presented with other 5's. It would have good qualities about it, but may be lacking in less detrimental aspects such as complexity. I honestly don’t doubt that Driscoll ever did anyone a good turn, the problem for me was that he reserved the right to do a bad one as part of selling someone something. With its all-natural hue and bottled at a robust 46% ABV, this expression has been nurtured within the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.

Sold to Brown Forman in 2016, the distillery now falls under the watchful eye of Master Blender, Rachel Barrie. Would love to try the later ones to see if they still have a good proportion of the much older spirit in there.Sherry sweetness, dark fruity leather, cocoa, citrus peels, vermouth and some orchard fruit and spice notes. The impact on the palate is rich and powerful yet smooth and creamy with a long aftertaste of spice and dark chocolate.
