About this deal

I should say as a former Scout Leader I used to say when taking 20 kids on camp for a week, I used to joke that it was like feeding an army or going on military manoeuvres.

In addition, Lord has interviewed numerous survivors, civilians, and officers whose personal experiences helped create a fascinating narrative that began with a disorganized movement of troops onto the beaches, the need to create a pier to allow ships to pick the men up, and organizing the men into small units that would make for an efficient extraction. The book also describes the heroic delaying actions at strongpoints such as Cassel, the tragic massacre of Wormhoult/Eschelbeck, the perimeter battles, the role of the RAF and the importance of the Dunkirk Mole, from whence the majority embarked. The Miracle of Dunkirk” is a compelling read that provides a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. They've got a truck but they can't get to Dunkink, the Germans are now in the way, so, Knight figures, why not try to hook up with the Allied forces to the south? This book is a very good book, you have to be able to really pay attention while reading this book because there is a lot of very confusing scenes and a lot of vocabulary that you need to know to understand the book. One of the strengths of Lord's telling of this disaster turned into a victory, is his attention to the action taking place on the perimeter, away from the beaches where the diminished and trapped BEF/French troops fought gallantly to hold off the Germans until the rescue could take place. Once the Germans realized what was occurring as the BEF and its allies began retreating north they worked to close off any access to French ports, be it Boulogne, Calais, and Dunkirk. I listened to it as an audiobook and I think that might be part of the reason I didn't love it as much as I hoped. The book is not new, I believe it was originally released in the 80's, but it has become more popular due to the film version of Dunkirk.

There's also the flashbacks to a young Fazal's life when lessons he learnt from his grandfather come in handy as he deals with death and destruction at the hands of an enemy. pages, including appendices covering evacuation statistics, bibliography, British units and ships engaged, eyewitness list, 27 b/w photos, e/paper maps. For The Miracle of Dunkirk, Lord interviewed hundreds of survivors and people who were involved in the evacuation. After eight months of Phoney War, however, Hitler suddenly attacked Belgium, Holland, and Luxemburg.

On the beaches and sand dunes, besides the roads and amidst the ruins lay the corpses of hundreds who had not reached the boats. The ingenuity of the British was seen as troops cannibalized materials from wherever they could, be it partially sunken destroyers, damaged buildings etc. If you have a promotional code or a quote code please enter it here so our site displays the offers for that promotion. General Alan Brook, Major-General Harold Alexander, and Major-General Bernard Montgomery “all cut their teeth at Dunkirk.

He also takes us to Dunkirk harbour and onto the beaches, where the British army was trapped and under attack, while the Royal Navy and the 'little ships' raced against time to rescue them. He evacuated on one of the final boats to pull up to the pier; that boat was sunk by the Germans; he was rescued by a different boat after being injured in the previous sinking. Octavo hardcover (Really tatty but good reading copy)in d/w tatty(Poor); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. This "miracle" was aided by mistakes on the part of the nazis with infighting between the German army tank divisions and the Luftwaffe who wanted to bomb and strafe the allied soldiers pinned to the coast thus enabling such huge numbers to escape back to England on the flotilla of anything that would float. As Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Lancers and the daughter of a 12th Royal Lancer, I am enormously proud of the Regiment’s long and illustrious history. This book sheds light on the German command’s perspective on the unfolding events and their assessment of the situation.
