About this deal

But the truth is, that the vintages have more depth (and I am not talking about half-way filled bottles left in the closet for 10 years) and have a better performance too (I am not saying that latest formulations do not perform!

The original gives me a solid 8+ hours longevity with incredible sillage and a good 4ft projection for 3+ hours before slowly tailing off. As an independent fragrance to someone who didn't know vintage then it may well be a very enjoyable fragrance for them. Yves Saint Laurent is a symbol of uniqueness, creativity and luxury, both in fashion and the world of cosmetics and perfumes.I think I would like this more if the black currant were not so pronounced throughout, but I have a feeling this is one of those frags that smell better in the air around you than when sniffing directly from your skin. A burst of black currant and sweet fruits begins the scent, with the light spice of star anise joining the fruits within a minute or two. However in England I found it is not very welcome as the natives go around opening doors and holding their nose saying you smell like a Indian takeaway.

But for me I wore it as a pre pubescent teen and I loved the way it made me feel when I wore it, like I was older than I really was. Nowhere near as common as in its heyday, which means you'll stand out from the crowd and garner plenty of compliments. In my opinion, Opium is the predecessor of La Nuit de L'homme and in many ways, does a better job at capturing the essence of nights spent with a new love interest or significant other. I evidently have an issue with balsom/resins like elemi or the Tolu Balsam in Opium because it imparts a "gummy" smell to the fragrance. If you're a wannabe bad boy looking to stand out in 'da club', this will project like a beast and distinguish you from all the other Sauvage wearing sheeple. However, if you do not have a problem with pepper or cedar, Opium is the dankest fragrance you can get. Initially sprayed on test strip, this smelled like a plastic beach ball with vanilla and sweet spices rubbed on it (lol).

It might have faded after a few hours but when I get a whiff of it from the 3 or 4 sprays on my chest, aahh! And man, this is a pretty niche scent, it's incredibly hard to pull off, don't get me wrong, it smells great, but you need to be a certain person. But give it a bit and after about 10-15 min it starts to follow the opening and progression of the EDT albeit at a slower more prolonged pace with slightly more modulated spicey blast as compared to the EDT, but still with a stronger black currant note which is much nicer once it takes a step back. The beauty of this beast is the sum of its parts: relatively few components yet so superbly well rounded, rich and utterly unapologetic in its boldness. First time I smelled this one, in the beginning of my journey, I immediately loved it and understood the name of it.I can see this being a pretty divisive scent, being that you either really like/love it or can't stand it, as there feels some odd duality to it.

First I rated opium pour homme a like, but after couple of wearing and get to know it better specially in the dry down it changed to absolutely love. Smelled this stuff on my older businessman uncle and loved it, so I bought it for myself, a young adult. But then it gets even more luscious, the creamy vanilla and woody-balsamic tolu waltzing in to add another layer of dense complexity. After that disaster, all that chaos fades into a somewhat nice vanilla but it still tries to cling a bit to that wretched opening with the occasional whiff of gross mixed with vanilla. It's kind of how I imagine a high class casino would've smelled in the 70s, 80s and early 90s in Monte Carlo or elsewhere on the Cote d'Azur. There's nothing like southern comfort, wearing a tuxedo, eating vanilla cupcakes and drinking a spicy-sweet iced liqueur. hours later the vanilla is strong along with warm woody notes, what I gather includes the tolu balsam too.
