About this deal

With summer within touching distance and lots more sunny, brighter days ahead, being able to visit the beach again is definitely one of life’s pleasures. Everything feels better by the sea with the golden sand between your toes, the water glistening and the salty air blowing through your hair.

One point to note for visitors that like a good walk is that Musselburgh Lagoons is part of the John Muir Way, the 134-mile long-distance walking route that runs from Helensburgh on the west coast to Dunbar on the east coast. It’s less than a miles’ walk from the train station to the beach. On the way you’ll pass the town harbour where you may spot some Arbroath Smokies over the smoking barrel – the town is famous for these local delicacies and featured in the winning fish dish on BBC2’s Great British Menu, 2021. Visit the Portobello Swim Centre: If it’s too cold for a swim in the sea, head over to the Portobello Swim Centre. It features an indoor Victorian pool and a Turkish bath, and as it’s run by the council the prices are very reasonable. Things to Do Nearby

Aberdeen

Due to the shallowness of the water, the waves ride quite high when the winds blow in from the north, making this beach one of the best in the area for windsurfing while the firm sand is a popular place for sand yachting. Edinburgh Seaside Gin has an interesting story in itself. The distillery has a knowledge transfer partnership with nearby Heriot-Watt University, one of the few institutions in the U.K. where you can acquire a degree in distilling. Indeed, Edinburgh Gin’s own head of distilling, David Wilkinson, is an alumnus of the programme. And it was with students on the Heriot-Watt MSc that Edinburgh Seaside was made.

You’ll find 2 miles of golden sand at Portobello Beach so there are plenty of spots away from the crowded areas where it’s possible to set up a picnic in relative peace and quiet, especially towards the northern end. Access to Gullane Beach is a wee bit more difficult than the others on this list as the rough footpaths from the car park are unsuitable for wheelchairs, but at least children will have a great time exploring the dunes and gorse bushes that surround the paths. Take a stroll down a coastal path to enjoy the coastline, before enjoying a well-earned ice cream or refreshing drink at the end. Gullane Beach, also known as Gullane Bents, is a 1-mile stretch of sand that’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike who come to enjoy relaxing strolls, sunbathing, swimming, or engaging in water sports such as windsurfing and kiteboarding thanks to the strong winds that blow in from the North Sea.Wake up to the sound of the waves by wild camping on Gullane Beach. Avoid the wind by bagging a spot protected by the sloping sand dunes, but don’t go so far that you don’t wake up to gorgeous views of the Firth of Forth to the west. We've gathered some of the best seaside walks around Edinburgh, none more than an hour's drive away. If you’re on a budget, follow Bath Street which runs to Portobello high street (0.2 miles away) where you’ll find a Greggs and a Bayne’s bakery on either side of the road. Tourist Information

Discover wonderful wildlife tours to book and experience in Scotland, including bird watching safaris, whale watching, farm tours and much more! From the beautiful curved bay, you can see right out to the Isle of Arran and the Mull of Kintyre. There’s a brilliant playpark for kids and some lovely gardens on the seafront as well as the spacious white sandy beach. The beach is split in half by Fisherrow Harbour which has a large car park behind it as well as public toilets and a children’s play park, making it the best place to head to for visitors. A perfect destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers, Newhailes Estate promises an enjoyable and educational experience for all ages. The construction of elegant Georgian and Victorian villas along the coastline contributed to the area’s growing reputation as a fashionable place to visit, and before long it became one of Scotland’s premier Victorian holiday destinations featuring a Lido (a type of outdoor pool), one of the UK’s first Turkish baths, and a 2-mile promenade that’s as popular today as it was when it was originally built in 1866. You’ll also see the promenade which hosts many events throughout the year such as the Big Beach Busk where musicians and performers entertain crowds of locals and tourists. With the gin originally created at Langley Distillery, they launched their own distillery and visitor centre in 2014. (As a side note, it’s a great distillery to visit, with a range of tour options. There are two custom bottles proudly on display at From the Gin Shelf HQ from our own ‘Gin Making Tour’. Highly recommended!) Building sandcastles will keep children totally engrossed as you chill out with a good book or a podcast.
