Darum nehmen The Cure ein neues Album auf". Rolling Stone (in German). 10 April 2018 . Retrieved 21 November 2022. Some critics, though, were initially underwhelmed. Robert Christchurch in The Village Voice criticised Smith for attempting to appease a larger audience by “broadening gothic clichés”. But others saw greatness. Barbara Ellen in the NME hailed Disintegration as “a mind-blowing and stunningly complete album”.If that song wasn’t on the record, it would be very easy to dismiss the album as having a certain mood. But throwing that one in sort of upsets people a bit because they think, ‘That doesn’t fit’.” Sound-wise, Disintegration was far removed from the quirky, skewed pop that the band had released from 1982 to 1988. So basically I have a massive emotional connection to this album. It just feels like this album gets me, you know? It's hard to explain. But the masterful playing on this album is also something to write about. The Cure obviously can write amazing pop songs, but on this album they let the songs breathe, they let the songs stretch themselves out and really get under your skin. That's another amazing thing about this beauty. Tolhurst, Lol (2016). Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys. Da Capo Press. p.393. ISBN 978-0-306-82428-9. Savage, Jon (26 July 2019). In early 1988, Smith began to write music without the rest of the band, demoing songs that took on a dismal, depressing form.

The band's early music videos have been described as "dreadful affairs" and have been maligned for their poor quality, particularly by the band itself. Tolhurst said, "Those videos were unmitigated disasters; we weren't actors and our personalities weren't coming across." [158] The video for "Let's Go to Bed" was their first collaboration with Tim Pope. The director added a playful element to the band's videos; the director insisted in a 1987 Spin interview, "I think that side of them was always there, but was never brought out." The band regrouped later in 1983, adding Andy Anderson on drums (as Tolhurst moved to keyboards) and Phil Thornalley on bass. That year they released a handful of singles, later compiled in Japanese Whispers, and a critically panned album, The Top, the following year. These releases showed the band pursuing a poppier sound, reflected in their chart success in the UK, with " The Lovecats" becoming their first top 10 hit.
