About this deal

The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.6 °C / 105 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook. Don't worry about the IdeaPad 120S getting too hot to handle. After we streamed 15 minutes of HD video on it, our heat gun recorded temperatures on its touchpad (77 degrees Fahrenheit), keyboard (92 degrees) and underside (91 degrees) that fell well below our 95-degree comfort threshold. Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services. This is a standard display format for tablet computers or small convertibles. You see more on the screen than on a smartphone but you can't use big resolutions well. On the other hand, mobility is not a problem.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Multimedia, Budget Multimedia, Gaming, Budget Gaming, Lightweight Gaming, Business, Budget Office, Workstation, Subnotebooks, Ultrabooks, Chromebooks The average temperature for the upper side under maximal load is 32.1 °C / 90 F, compared to the average of 30.7 °C / 87 F for the devices in the class Subnotebook. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 500 graphics chip sits at the bottom of Intel's iGPU barrel. The graphics chip is suitable for simple graphical work, but more demanding tasks (e.g., photo editing, 3D model rendering) are completely out of the question. The HD Graphics 500 can support up to two external displays, although these will need to be pared down to FHD or lower resolutions. It's unlikely the graphics chip can drive more than a single 4K monitor at 30 Hz. The IdeaPad 120S has dual bottom-facing speakers that provided adequate sound. The 2 x 1 watt stereo speakers reproduced semiaccurate audio that was loud enough to fill our small conference room. When I listened to "Call Me Baby" by EXO, I could hear the bass and synth all right. But the percussion sounded tinny, and the strings were barely audible. At least the vocals came through clearly, with little distortion. In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.9 °C / 80 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F. Lenovo's petite IdeaPad 120S is a budget ultraportable that offers good-for-the-cost performance, but you can find better screens and keyboards by stepping up to the next highest class. Will I be able to return to windows afterwards? I'm not planning on keeping both OS's. It's either linux or windows. I think this way makes things easier and saves the precious scarce storage at my disposal. However I'm very ignorant about pc tech. Will I be able to install windows if linux doesn't fill my needs? would I have to buy a new windows license? Is the windows 10 pro key saved in the bios or something? is it enough if I just save the windows key/id? The IdeaPad 120S may be cheap, but its battery lasts as long as your average ultraportable laptop. The Laptop Mag Battery Test (web surfing at 100 nits) took 8 hours and 35 minutes to drain the IdeaPad 120S, a time that narrowly beats the 8:25 category average and the 8:23 from the Stream 11. However, the Inspiron 11 3000 lasted even longer, with a time of 13:39. The IdeaPad 120S copied a 4.97GB batch of multimedia files in 1 minute and 28 seconds, for a rate of 57.8 megabytes per second. That hard-drive speed is much faster than the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14's 43.5 MBps (1 minute and 47 seconds), the Asus L402SA's sluggish 14.1 MBps (6 minutes) and the HP Stream 14's 24.5 MBps (3 minutes and 28 seconds).Intel HD Graphics 500: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Apollo Lake series. The IdeaPad 120S' screen performed better in our brightness test, registering 219 nits on our light meter. That score didn't surpass the category average (254 nits), but it's better than the showings we observed from the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14 (188 nits), the Asus L402SA (206 nits) and the HP Stream 14 (186 nits).

Celeron N3350: An Apollo Lake family, dual-core, ultra-low-power processor (SoC) that saw the light of day in 2016. Its two cores run at 1.1 GHz to 2.4 GHz; these are not Hyper-Threading-enabled meaning there are no additional threads. This chip has a fairly competent integrated graphics solution, the Intel HD Graphics 500, and eats very little (~6 W). The Celeron N3350 is based on the Goldmont CPU microarchitecture that came to replace Silvermont (2013), bringing with it several welcome improvements. The CPU is Secure Boot-compatible; technically, it will have no issue running 64-bit Windows 11. The average N3350 in our database is just as fast as the venerable Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 is in multi-thread loads; the two cores of this Celeron trail behind a single core of any half-decent CPU such as the Intel Core i3-7130U.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

The IdeaPad 120S' 21,016 score on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited graphics test beats the 13,297 from the Inspiron 11 3000 (Intel HD Graphics) and the 16,230 from the Stream 11 (Intel HD Graphics 400) but falls short of the 59,434 ultraportable average.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
